I'll guess and say the twist in clouds is just a mid-level swirl, with the convection soon to decrease (it already seems to be displaced from the earlier concentrated area of convection)...
These disturbances often flare up, look impressive for a few hours, and then dissipate - we'll see...

I don't know ... nothing recon is seeing is at all impressive, but that convection has been going strong for over 9 hours now and doen't seem to be dying yet. That's different than the average flare-and-die pattern.
I certainly think it's worth it for recon to stick around for the entire scheduled flight, anyway.
