Bingo!!
stormtruth....which is more important to you? Safety or convenience?
It's obvious what your posts imply, but just answer with one word, please.
It isn't a one word question. Security up to a certain point which we have now passed.
Actually, it was a one word question, safety or convenience? Which is THE most important to you?
It isn't a one word question because you need both. It's like asking someone which do you prefer food or water? You need security and convenience which is why there is a debate on the issue.
No, it's nothing at all like choosing food or water. Both of those are necessities. Convenience is well, a convenience.
I like things that are convenient. If I had to choose just one, however, no doubt it would be safety. It is clearly more important than convenience, at least to most people...who enjoy breathing and walking and things of the sort.
The other problem is convenience and privacy are being traded for the illusion of security. There are still many ways they can attack and kill us. Banning iPods and bottled water does not reduce that threat.
The illusion? So you think it's safer to let them bring on liquids on electronics when we just found out they were using them to try and blow up airplanes? And to most clear-thinking Americans, security is more important than both convenience and privacy. What good are either of those if you're dead?
Of course they will continue to try and find ways to attack and kill us. They're terrorists. It is completely illogical to just sit on our thumbs and make that as easy for them as possible, since they will just hunt another way.

Wow, hard to even respond to this. lol
First of all, as has been said numerous times by others who have flown recently...they were offered BOTTLED WATER. Secondly, we shouldn't ban liquids so you don't have to go through the horrendous event of asking a stewardess for a drink? Are you serious?
Besides the mention of movies and I haven't heard of them banning books, bored is still better than dead. Boy oh boy, what a needy little bunch some of us have become.....entertain me at all times and don't even consider inconveniencing me, even for my own safety.

What about business travelers? People with kids on very long flights? Duty free stores that will be wiped out by this because the expensive wines and perfumes will not be purchased? What about flights stuck on tarmacs with no AC where people will now have no water to drink -- deaths could occur in a situation like that. That just happened last week in Ohare during the heat wave except the people were lucky in that they had brought bottled water on board. Sorry you don't see it but this will ruin air travel for many people.

I don't think that the implication made in this post or in mine earlier or in another one that you replied sarcastically to was meant to imply that we should drop the restrictions.
Okay *Edit... after going back to read Stephanie's earlier referred to post. In the first place, Stephanie, I have no qualms with anything in that post, nor was any "sarcasm" aimed at anything you said--actually I agree inasmuch as I wouldn't want to fight the lines and hassle all this will undoubtedly create. Certainly NOTHING in YOUR post made any such implication, nor did I infer anything did--- that said please continue:
Perhaps not--perhaps so--that is something only the poster knows so I certainly acknowledge your implication. And for whatever it's worth, I wouldn't deny that these would add inconveniences that might have an impact on ridership; but to suggest it would be the collapse of the airline industry (directly or indirectly) OR to go on, and on, and on, and on, about the inconveniences like the loss of a bottle of wine, it does rather appear that the general point was, in fact, that the "inconveniences" were unjustified, a point with which I disagreed--especially when viewed in total context. Eye of the beholder I guess. As far as the use of sarcasm--it's done all the time in making a point, and I feel that as long as it's not directed at anyone in the form of a personal attack, which I certainly didn't do, then I see no reason to be concerned about employing sarcasm or irony--which I've seen used in here many times--including some pretty strong ones by Mods themselves. I don't see anything wrong with it if it is used as a literary device moreso than as a means of attacking an individual. I guess you could say mentioning the "inconveniences" once or twice might've been enough---but it went on, and on, and on... so I simply made a response expressing that frustration--"okay then drop all the restrictions".... and it violated neither political nor personal animus parameters. Simply put, an expression of frustration with the incessant railing over the issue. We do have an "eyeroll" emoticon, and I guess mine was a verbal equivalent of the same.
I still say the incessant railing about "inconveniences" when thousands of lives were at stake is trivializing a far more serious scenario than those inconveniences.

They have to do what they are doing. In the same way a while ago there was a tank outside Heathrow (I'm not joking as I went to Heathrow when it was there) due to information they had.

Oops, I was still on page 8 and didn't see A2K make a similar post mocking the wine. Oh well... lol
That's okay, Kelly, it appears that even a cynical sarcasm can be misinterpreted. And with as fast and furious as things have been going on this board, I can fully understand why and how--hope no one took any offense to either post, as clearly none was intended.... it actually was trying to put a lighter look on a very serious topic.

dang...and i just filled my car up!
ROFL.... like someone else said... enjoy it while we can, because they'll be back on the upswing soon enough, I wager. This will be yet another temporary setback to the airline industry; but not one from which it won't recover. I just hope that any of those that may have "got away" don't manage to succeed in efforts anywhere else... as reports seem to suggest the actual event was planned for days from now.

wait...could you make it several hours without a/c or any electronic devices of any kind? if not then I could see where these new rules could become a problem, every summer I go to a camp in western Va for two weeks, no a/c and no electronics and I am a teen, most teens cant make it 2 days without that stuff...maybe that is why we see differently because what they are doing would be no problem to me, but it seems some people have become too dependent on such things as a/c and electronics...as for the stores, they will sell stuff, its called mail...check it out, its actually a neat little thing and you can ship your items to where ever you want! plus the fact that chances are the stores are selling wine to people who have canceled their flights and need some wine and here in a few days things like that will most likely be allowed back onto planes...so there arent really any problems there...then again just my own thoughts and ideas aka my $0.02stormtruth wrote:What about business travelers? They just showed what nitroglycerne in it's pure form looks like... and it looks exactly like clear syrup.
This I know... someone accidentally made a weak concoction of same in a chemlab.

Watches and jewelry will be next. Who is ready to hand that over with all the airport theft and lost luggage?
*sigh*... I rest my case and if that's uncalled for sarcasm... then I plead guilty-- Mea Culpa.

This is never going to go away. Your children will be living this way all their lives. We need to just try to stay on top of it and if that means give up some things we don't want to, we have no choice. Our forefathers gave up for us, it is our turn. We have to do what is safe for everyone and if that means losing some conveniences, so what. Our lives are more important.

Stormtruth - you're really reaching now.
Yes, I whined about how inconvenient I already felt traveling was going to be. Guess what? You can probably make bombs out of anything you want and hide them in anything you want. Someone is probably already trying to do it.
What the heck does theft at the airport have to do with terrorism? Honestly?
There are quite a few that just HAVE TO keep posting things so they can a) get the last word, b) be annoying c) stir things up d) all of the above. Keep it up.
