Quick question about African waves...

How did the NHC find out if a system right off Africa was a depression or not during the 1970's or even 1960's? They had SAT images of course but not Quick Stat to tell if it had a closed off circulation and such.

Surface observation and Ships obs with alot of interpretation of the other data available.

Primarily they used large satellite pictures printed on special paper and they would analyze the imagery by following or tracing low level cloud features and close off the circulation based on curvature of those features - basically a fine art and at times very subjective given during that time they would only receive just a couple of satellite images every day or one image over a tropical system every twelve hours. I believe they still have many of these old sat images in storage to this day...

Good answers. Where did you hear all that TWTC? Maybe a link or source would be great.
