Just wondering.. how come the NHC has them in PDF and MSWORD format for 2005 this year? Usually you can just click on it from the site, but not this season.

It's not a problem for me, but I was just wondering why.

Somebody really should write a letter to them asking them to change it back to HTML.

Not too much of a problem here either, but for dial up and slow computer users, it is. Heck it has even frozen my computer a couple of times, since I have an older version of Word that freezes often, and PDF's take up a lot of memory.

On the PDF version, I always have trouble with the best track map. It takes forever to render, and if you make the slightest move it restarts. VERY VERY ANNOYING!

FWIW, the TC Reports' target audience is NOT the public. HTML reports require extra time to create which equals extra money. The Word and PDF files are much easier on them. Furthermore, the target audience DOES have access to Word and/or PDF and the connection isn't an issue.

I agree. I HATE PDF!!!! freeze freeze and freeze some more.

As for the report

this wont be the last update on the death and damage totals. Truely a horrific event.

What do you mean by "extra money"? I'd think the software to write PDF's also cost money. But you do have a good point, maybe last year was so active they really didn't have time to write HTML reports, so they resorted to PDF and Word.

it takes a whole 5 seconds to make a PDF via open office. I do it all of the time

But, I'm talking about in the Season Archives.
I always thought that it was kinda public.

My friends and I have used them for school reports...

And even if they aren't, we can still ask them to do something differently.

Extra time means someone spending time working on it. That cost's the government money in wages.

Why pay a worker for HTML programming when you can do it in PDF for a fraction of the cost?

You mean the tropical cyclone reports, like the one Derek posted in this thread?

Most of the products issued by the NHC are technically not for the public. It doesn't mean that the public can't use them... it's just that isn't the intended audience.

Really... the only "public" product is the public advisory.

The rest of the information is for meteorologists and emergency managers.

As for asking them about doing something different... sure, but most likely it isn't going to work. Take it from someone with government experience... these decisions aren't just randomly thought of. Usually there are numerous pointless meetings to discuss the benefits of changing to a new format. A few emails from the public regarding a meteorologist report will likely have little or no impact.

Yes, that is the tropical cyclone report. It used to be called the "preliminary report."

It still should be called that, there will be more updates I'm sure.
