Will...maybe you need to reread my post I made about this subject a few days ago:

Ok, this here is from the Thu Sept. 11, 2003 Hurricane Isabel Discussion, however is still a good source of info on ridges and troughs:

THE BIG QUESTION CONTINUES TO BE WHAT WILL HAPPEN BEYOND THE 5-DAY
FORECAST PERIOD. IT IS STILL IMPOSSIBLE TO STATE WITH ANY
CONFIDENCE WHETHER A SPECIFIC AREA ALONG THE U.S. COAST WILL BE
IMPACTED BY ISABEL. THIS WILL LIKELY DEPEND ON THE RELATIVE
STRENGTH AND POSITIONING OF A MID-TROPOSPHERIC RIDGE NEAR THE EAST
COAST AND A MID-LATITUDE TROUGH TO THE WEST OR NORTHWEST AROUND THE
MIDDLE OF NEXT WEEK. UNFORTUNATELY...WE HAVE LITTLE SKILL IN
PREDICTING THE EVOLUTION OF STEERING FEATURES AT THESE LONG RANGES.

Note that it was written just 7 days before Isabel hit North Carolina and they still had no clue where the ridge and trough were going to set up. You can guess now, but will most likely be wrong, we can't predict with confidence where it is going to set up 7 days out, let alone a month...I hope this answers your question...no one knows where or how intense until it actually is about to hit.
Hope this helps :)

To clairify...I am not suggesting that the Gulf is at "more of a risk" than the east coast.

The only mention I gave for the gulf is some sort of possible development sneeking up out of the SW Caribbean as advertised by the CMC and to some extent the GFS next week.

I think there is a thread that explains this in detail...but all I really mentioned is I wouldn't rule out some sort of surprise sneeking up from the Caribbean.

I am not on the record for any type of landfall forecast and I don't do them.

The season is about to start rolling. And when it does, the action is going to be fast and furious. If I lived on the east coast or the gulf coast (which I do), I'd be checking my batteries, water and stuff to make sure I was good to stay or go (depending on what course of action my forecast office recommends). You should do the same, and also encourage your parents to check their supplies. That's something you can control. Hang on tight.

You make it sound like a great action thriller. Put on your seat belt folks. Get ready for the ride of your lives.

One shift in the Bermuda high or the ECT, and an East coast season could become GOM season.

For someone that is not trying you are certainly coming across as rude and VERY VERY IMPATIENT Will. Now, Cycloneye just tried to ask you nicely to be patient and you've ignored this request once again. Chill!

Will, why don't you try reading more carefully and thoroughly instead of posting constantly. Every question you keep repeatedly bombarding this board with has been answered time and time again. You are not reading nor researching previously posted material.

There are alot of us who do not hardly post because we are in the learning stages and that requires alot of reading and research. After looking reallllllly good and our questions aren't answered then we ask for help......and wait patiently for a reply from those who are more experienced........not before. These experienced people generally work very hard and long hours in the field of weather and they don't always have time to sit at the computer and watch this forum to see if there is a question they might be able to answer IMMEDIATELY. Give em a break! They are doing a great job here and we certainly don't want to be demanding of what little free time they do have.

Hang in there..........................you'll be an expert before you know it!

BTW the 0Z GFS...just out...is all over the previous CMC idea...although the eastern Atlantic is interesting we are going to need to watch the Caribbean closely this weekend.

I was trying to be nice by again answering the question he had just PM'd to me before posting this thread.

But it's all good. I don't care anymore. I have absolutely NOTHING to lose since I don't have anything anymore. I would feel bad for those who otherwise escaped Katrina, Wilma, Rita, Ivan, Dennis and the other recent assaults on the coast though.

You don't have anything to lose? You still have the gift of life. The greatest gift ever. With life anything is possible.

Hello all, Willjnewton mentor here. I am trying to get him to understand the differeance between a forum and a chat room. Could I ask your help? I told him not to make a post more than one per 24 hours? Does that sound about right for him to get answers to the type of questions he asks? Isn't it true you all need time to think about his question, formulate an answer and then respond? If I can get an Average Resonable Response Time (ARRT) ( ) I will use this to help him concentrate and focus his postings. Thanks.

WilljNewton mentor.. we appreciate your posting. There's alot of times where the posts come once an hour, so the volume increases alot, with the same question being answered. Alot have given the answers to the question and then they do not respond again out of frustrations.

Well I'm not putting that at risk -or my kids' lives. But I ain't got no stuff that can't fit into a suitcase, only have a couple of pieces of furniture and I've got a truck. :D
But my house, things and furniture all got wiped last year.
