Good morning Cookiely. There is already a thread on this labeled Tracking Upper Level Troughs/Lows that is very informative. Check it out :D

I myself like Will don't understand all this as well, but because of his questions and the many people who have took the time to answer them, i to have managed to learn more from this. living in thease affected areas of a possible hit being east coast, gulf coast, or where ever always tends to make you worry. But here we get more of a insite that the local TV stations don't always show us. I have never seen maps and data anywhere like i have seen here. Here you see things as to why, they just don't show on TV. It's a blessing to have a site such as we have here. And i to am proud to be a part of it..

The great part i love the most is this:

1) You see somthing about a storm on TV they try to give you the best estimate they can as to where and when it will hit.
2) They try to inform you as to how strong it is
3) The watches and warnings we need to prepare

But the down side is that Air Time on TV is extreemly expensive. Therefore you don't get all the finer details as to how and why they know whats to come.

The up side is here on this site you can come and see for your self and learn why.

Will thanks for asking those questions.

Troughs have always been the East Coast's "protection", particularly for the Mid Atlantic and New England.

Great explanation Paul! :D
