The NHC really need to put a Floater on this because this image is really old.

Those east Atlantic images come from the Met 8 satellite which I believe only update every 6 hours? It's either 3 or 6...I can't remember.

A floater is not possible. Metsat only allows the gov't to release imagery every 6 hours.

NRL is allowed to release imagery more frequently though

Derek at what point can NOAA stick one of the floater sats on it? How far West does it have to go before they can?

Then again, some journalists get all their information from Storm2K ...

In practice, though, most journalists who write about tropical depressions/storms/hurricanes simply call up the National Hurricane Center and talk to the meteorologists, who are both extremely helpful and very clear in explaining what's happening. I suspect that's the source of CNN's information, either directly or through the AP.

You are correct that few newspaper or wire service reporters have any formal meteorology training. It's different for TV, of course.

Rush Limbaugh commented today on this thread http://www.storm2k.org/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=88438 on the radio and seems to be up to date when a system is about to form. He was the first news media person other than a met that I heard mention tropical troubles in the caribbean before Alberto formed. So he gets his info from someone other the regular media.

Ooooo.. Rush is not a journalist. He is a different story and is very informed precisely because of the fact that he does research. He and his staff know their stuff and are very professional at doing news. They get their stuff from a variety of reliable sources.

We really shouldn't be discussing this in this thread, though, so that's it for me!

It looks like TD4 is much fuller on the southern half, but its actually looks alot healthier now than it did when I first woke up from Visable.

Above is another link for a satellite image (Covering the South Atlantic and part of the tropical North Atlantic). Not a floater, but it does show more of the Atlantic. It's updated every 30-minutes.

Above is a link for the continent of Africa (MET8), and is also updated every 30 minutes.

It looks way more organized to me, with convection now towards the center and some nice banding. It looks more *fragile*, in that the convection between the center and the SAL to the N has faded away, and dry air suffocation has been the preferred mode of death for good-looking waves this year.

Good evening all.

What is the difference between a "floater" satellite and other ones?
