The news crawl didn't actually say that the hurricane was going to hit Houston, did it? It took your original post to say that IF it hit Houston it would hit around Friday. I guess you can argue that you shouldn't say stuff like that because people are going to misunderstand it... but the statement itself isn't that bad.
The greater point, which is that the media is fixin' to go into overdrive, is a good point. These people were expecting this year to be really bad, and it hasn't been so far, so they're going to try to make up for lost time.

It said that there is going to be a hurricane in the gulf on tuesday and that everyone needs to keep an eye on it.. if it comes this way it will be around friday... but still, i think its kind of early to be scrolling about it... maybe the sales are low for Everready flashlights and batteries...this should boost it... Are there any other gulf cities running scrolls yet???

Haha, Yankee girl...I was watching Fox the other day and they had a scroll on the bottom just to tell us Debby had formed... I was like WTF? Have we gone overboard or what? Then they followed it up with "Locally, yada yada" as if that would somehow make it relevant. They scrolled this thing like 5 times in an hour...it was so irritating.
Glad I am not the only one who thinks it's a bit obsessive.
