Souvenirs and Collectables

#1 Postby azskyman » Sun Jun 15, 2003 9:18 pm

Whether you are a sports fan, a person who travels now and then, or perhaps you are a serious collector of "things," most of us have something among our possessions that we consider a prize...either for its uniqueness, its value, or the circumstances under which you got it.

I don't have much in the way of autographs...by you could call my autographed books by weather historian David Ludlum a nice part of my weather book collection.

I own a ship's mercury barometer I purchased out of a small shop near Bar Harbor, Maine. Mohogany and brass. The mercury made the trip all the way out here to Phoenix. Iti s about 36" tall and hangs on my office wall.

A second barometer is one I purchased in Lucerne, Switzerland, back in 1988. It is an aneroid barometer encased in glass and hardwood with many of its inside components brass coated and exposed.

Other "collectables" I have are two 1914D Lincoln Head pennies...both of which were found not purchased, and both have some value but more importantly I hope to someday present them to each of my sons....at an appropriate time.

Finally, after this week, I have the original flag that flew at my parents home while I was in Vietnam for 1970. It is now cleaned up and packaged in a sealed plastic bag.

How about you...any autographed photos of stars, sports players, or any other souvenirs you would have a hard time parting with?

I collect golf balls with the course logo from every course I've played or attended a tournament. My "prize" is a range ball and tournament logo from the Masters. I was luck enough to attend the tournament the last year that Tiger played as an amateur.

The only "souvenirs" in my collection are (a) a 20" Taliban fighting knife and (b) a Vietnam-era NBC decontanimation kit which I received from an old classmate, who had a couple lying around in his own collection.

I am a collectable Pack Rat. I confess.

My most prized possession is an autographed pix of Bill Keenely..*sigh*, I really dig that met!

I also collect pens from different places I've visited, I save things like napkins from the planes I fly on to a vacation.I save little do-dads from special events, doesn't matter what it is, I attach a special memory to it and off it goes into my hope chest. At this rate I'll need a new hope chest, this one is almost full!

My household has an autographed Ted Williams photo, an autographed Cal Ripken photo, two autographed Elton John tshirts.

Many of my collectibles are family heirlooms.

I also have a print from my great great grandfather when he was a printers apprentice in Asche, Czechaslavkia. It is not actually printed but has tiny beads sewn onto perforated paper. It dates back to about 1888.

I also have a Phi Beta Kappa key from Syracuse University, 1893.

I also have 5 Catholic Prayer Books. They are all in French all from the mid to late 1800's.

Another book is a hard back "Pocket Dictionary of the English and German Languages". It was printed in 1867 and my great grandparents purchased it between 1898 - 1900 in St. Louis, MO.

And for fun, I collect "Santa's". I probably have close to 150 of them. Each year I lovingly unwrap each one and rewrap it after Christmas.

I collect wisdom and insight from everyone I encounter.

Well, it sounded good anyway.

I collect old soft drink bottles with painted-on labels. I also have a modest collection of old road maps.
