This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

A Quiet Labor Day???

#1 Postby gatorcane » Thu Aug 31, 2006 8:25 am

On on near Labor Day has historically featured some of the most power hurricanes that have made landfall in the US, however, this year looks extremely quiet and we MAY just get to enjoy our Labor Day not tracking anything that is close to landfall.

All I have to say is let the partying begin (hopefully)

A "quite" what Labor Day? j/k

I noticed that the GOM and Caribbean are as clear as a bell. Very unusual for 8/31. I wonder if the season will even be normal. Hopefully the quiet trend will continue.

Even the storms/hurricanes we have had were not that impressive at all.

Looks like late winter out there across the tropic, but how much longer could that last - hopefully through labor day. Lots of barbeques and beer drinking :P :P :P

It's quite possible if the succession of fronts doesn't end. That would be just fine with me :-)

Even if El-Nino is causing higher than normal windshear in the Western Caribbean that still does not leave us in the clear. I am watching the Cape Verde Region fairly closely.

Why perk?

The westerlies have started to impact our weather here even in south Texas as evidenced by the weak front earlier this week and a much stronger front expected this weekend.

Anything that even remotely tried to organize this year in the western Gulf has been ripped to shreads by shear.

I know I am an amateur ... but when I consider all of this and what I have seen over the years, I just believe we're done. If I'm wrong, I'll be the first to post here with the "Kick Me I'm a Dunce" message. But I would be curious why you disagree.

I expect the pattern to change back to Summertime the middle of Sept. We will need to watch the tail end of the front and associated trough next week. I still believe will see a W GOM threat this month.

Remember 1988. Sept brought Hurricane Florence to LA and Gilbert to S TX. Sometimes the GOM does not get active until Sept.

Portastorm Katdaddy just made my point, and let us not forget Rita which came in at 93.9 in late September.

Guys ... I know September can bring some very bad storms to Texas. I don't doubt that at all. But last year was not a developing El Nino year or a (neutral-to-El Nino year) like this year. Not sure about 1988.

In another thread I found a small study done by NWS Corpus about developing El Nino years and Texas hurricane activity. It's certainly interesting reading:

Portastorm i had'nt read that particular study, but after reading it changes nothing for me, plus i've never known Mother Nature to subscribe to studies.
