This is exactly what I am talking about, having kids on busses in an unsafe environment where tornadoes are common and high winds are likely and with horrible road conditions.

why don't school dsitricts have plans for tropical cyclones?? It doesn't make sense. If they did , then they would have to adhere to them.

and to defend myself.. I know I have the right to go pick up my children from school, but I don't think my boss would like for me to leave, taking 30 minutes to go pick them up, and 30 minutes back, (which would be my lunch hour), and THEN have to bring them here to work. He'd either have to fire me.. or send me home with my kids..

PLUS, Horry County schools have a policy, and I'm not sure if this is state-wide or just county, but they have a policy of only 5 days of doctor excused days and 5 days of unexcused days. If they use all of those and then some, they cannot graduate to the next grade level. Parents had to sign a consent form stating that they understood the policy when they signed their kids up for school this year. Of course, if I pick them up after 11:30 they're considered excused because they've attended 1/2 day. :D just a little info for me to type to get my mind off the wind/rains that are off and on outside my window.

myrtle - here in pb county, fl - if they are gone a dy before they are dismissed, due to a storm, then they don't really enforce those rules. Also - if you are picking your children up early, then why wouldn't you take the day off? Just would make sense to me - safety first.

If the watches and warnings had been issued correctly, you would probably not have been at work with the problem of school and picking up kids today.

I understand completely what Myrtle is saying... Honestly, not everyone has the luxury of being able to take off work, especially those who are poor and making barely more than minimum wage.

I'm a paralegal for a law firm here.. enough said? lol

Nah.. my boss is sweet.. he's letting us off early today so I will be able to pick up my youngest from afterschool daycare and my oldest takes the bus home so I should be able to meet him in the driveway as he's getting off the bus. And school is less than a mile from my home.

Yep. If an employer objects to me picking my children up from school because of dangerous weather, that would put up a huge red flag to me that perhaps I'm working for the wrong employer. If a school were to object to me picking up my children because of dangerous weather (which is quite unlikely), too friggin' bad. If they want to push the issue, I'll be happy to see them in court. Parents have not only an inherent RIGHT to protect their children, but a moral DUTY. And that duty supercedes schools, employers and everything else. Period.

Much less - if it became known that that employer did not allow that in a time of need - I don' think they would be thought of by their clients very well.
