I think it has more to due with our schools being the primary shelters in the area and the number of mobile homes which are usually the first to be told to evacuate
From what I understand in Florida, school busses can't be on the road in winds 35mph or over, that is why they close even if it is a tropical storm.

Elementary and Learning Ctr. 12:30 p.m.
Middle Schools 12:40 p.m.
High School and Early College 1:00 p.m.
Brunswick Community College
will close at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, August 31. There will be no classes after 3:30 p.m. Thursday. Regular hours and classes will resume on Friday, Sept. 1.
Roger Bacon Charter Day School
-early pickup
kind and 1st at 11:45 a.m.
2nd and 3rd at 12:00 p.m.
4th-8th at 12:15 p.m.
Southeastern Preschool Education Center
Closing Thursday at 4 p.m. re-opening Friday at 10:00 a.m.
SE Christian Academy
Preschool closed at 12:30 p.m.
New Hanover County
No school closings
ALL after school activities cancelled

Excellent post. I Agree ALL THE WAY. Sometimes parents just have to make the provisions.
