I can understand those of you who feel no hurricane warning is ok but I live in Greenville, NC and we are most likely going to experiance sustained TS force winds with gust into the 50's at least here if not worse and I actually had a co-worker just come up and ask me if I had heard the was a storm off the coast!!!!!, up until 5 min ago he had no idea. The media which is how 95% of people get there info on weather ( they are not all weather freaks like ourselves) from the media and the media gives a lot more attention to hurricane warning than hurricane watch. I know the a hurricane watch means hurricane conditions are possible but a warning carries a lot more weight with media types which means the message gets out better.
Most people are not bashing the NHC it is just that they are the go to people on hurricane all agency look to them for the best up to date and accurate information and I happen to believe IMHO they missed this big time, and while I understand why that happens why not error on saftey side and go with a warning at 5am or 11 am and then say well it was only a 60-70 mph TS instead of going oops sorry it was a 75-85 MPH hurricane and we only put out a warning 5 hrs before it hit .

then complain to your media! Let them know they are not providing you with the info you need! If that doesn't work then stop watching them or buying their papers. It is not the NHC's fault! Complain to local officials they are not goetting good enough info out there soon enough for you to make wise decisions. Put the blame where it needs to be put.

Is this Avila that is doing this by himself? I sure hope so b/c I can't imagine a group of seasoned NHC folks sitting around and saying "ok, we've got a intensifying 991 70mph ts that's going to hit in 5-8 hours. Let's not put hurricane warnings out." That would just blow my mind and confidence in that organization quite frankly.

This is no where near as bad as the total botched jobs during Gaston and Cindy.
In Gaston, they had no recon in the storm when it was making landfall as a hurricane because the entire fleet, except for 1 plane was focused on Frances
In Cindy, there was not even a Hurricane Watch in effect for a landfalling hurricane
Nothing worng with what NHC is doing. They are not forecasting thsi to become a cane; thus, no warnings, just w atch.
Now, whether or not it will become a cane is a different matter

And I think we both know why they are forecasting this not to become a hurricane.

I've sat back and read this thread. The ordinary joe is not going to be looking for information on a weatherboard. And i seriously doubt they're going to rush to their computer and logon to the nhc site. They'll be looking to their local tv met or twc. I don't know what the local mets are telling them.

The local channel 6 met just said something like: Squally weather. . . Occasional gusty winds. The graphic says 25-30mph. I think they should tell people in trailers or substandard homes, even those in low areas, to seek better shelter and higher ground. High tide is 1AM.

Okay that may have come off harsh, and they are closing schools and such. But that is more about the flooded roads. I even got off work early . . . but the police laughed when I asked when they would close the bridge (the policy is to close the bridge whenever the winds are more than 45mph). I guess the average Joe with a clue might know to go somewhere safe. I have not heard about shelters in New Hanover County, however.

I'm telling you, it's because a "hurricane warning" has not been issued. It may be stupid, it may not make sense, but people have come to expect the warning to be issued if they are going to get hurricane conditions. If they don't get the warning, they don't react. That's why the NHC can't fail to issue a warning in a situation like this. I just hope it's a minimal one when it hits.
