Up to 313,000 as of 2:00 p.m. Eastern.

DC already has about 8,000 out of service, and the heaviest rains and strongest winds haven't made it this far north yet. http://www.pepco.com/home/emergency/maps/zip/

Without being rude, I was looking at it at the time you posted and it was only around 310-315,000, and this recent jump to near 320,000 because of a spike in the Northern VA and Shenandoah outages . . . but whatever, it's still a lot of people - luckily not including me.

Why is it that Virginia has so many more power outages than their North Carolina base, despite the fact its intensity was greater in NC? (IIRC, the same happened with Isabel)

Much higher population in southeastern Virginia than eastern North Carolina. 1 million people plus in Hampton Roads.

To be specific, about 1.2 million in Virginia Beach+Norfolk+Chesapeake+Hampton+Newport News. Compare that to 95,000 people in Wilmington, 50,000 in the Outer Banks counties, etc.

I am staring out the window into a dark, dark world. Basically, my apartment building is on the outer fringes of the part of downtown Richmond that still has power. The VCU campus and the nearby high-rise apartment buildings are totally dark.
