Possible Major Long Tracker Fish Where is Everybody?

I kept hearing people say "I hope for a fish, I want to track a fish storm" - Florence could be on its way to a larger storm than Katrina or Wilma but where is everybody?

I think its because if it doesn't look to impact the US and is going to curve - even if it hits Bermuda or Newfoundland (in which case it would not be a fish), it doesn't matter because I claim many of us only care if there is potential for landfall in the U.S (there are obvious exceptions who like hurricanes in general not for the excitement and drama of landfalling US ones)

Derek you are obviously in the group that likes to track/forecast hurricanes no matter where they are in the world

Some are into weather and some are into weather that may affect them! I fall into the latter category, but I make no apologies for that. I already have other hobbies that I'm engaged in and although I can see the lure of weather forecasting, I'm not smart enough to figure it all out!

well if someone's life is in danger they are going to follow something closer to make sure they have all the latest information on the storm. thus there will be more people, who are concerned.

now with that concern may come excitement at the hint of danger.

the exception would be those whose first introduction to tropical intrests was a traumatic experience IMO

If storms aren't a threat to land, they aren't as much of an interest to many people. I don't see why you find this so surprising. Besides, it's not much to look at right now anyway.

The majority of members here are "lurkers" and stop in especially when a storm is much closer to being a threat to the CONUS, which Flo is still quite a few days from impacting anywhere in the US.

There are also other reasons which the mods have tried to address, but many simply refuse to abide by.

It's dicussed over and over because the weirdness of humans is constantly amazing, and the diversity of our interests right up there with it. It won't change, and it will always be noted. If that is kept in mind, it's pretty interesting to watch...sorta like tracking a storm

You have varying types of members; among them:
- "Hurricane Enthusiasts" who watch all of them be it Atlantic, Pacific, Indian Ocean etc. They don't care if it is a "fish" or a threat; they are there fascinated by Mother Nature.
- "Pro Mets"- obvious what their interest is
- "Atlantic Hurricane Enthusiasts for Threats" who watch only if the storm is a threat to the US (or the islands)
- Atlantic Hurricane Enthusiasts for LOCAL Threats who follow closely any storm that threatens where they live.
I think that S2K is a great home for all 4 of these categories.

So, when you have a Florence it really only fits those in the first two categories when it is fairly certain that she will be a "fish" Once that expectation was carved into stone (OK, more like "sand" since nothing is carved in stone with the tropics) category 3 and 4 left the board and probably only return once in a while to confirm that its status remains as a fish.

That's my take on the relative inactivity on the board.

Watch what happens again in that "uncertainty" period of the next one.
And the 600 or more on board if a storm actually threatens (next year or later I am hoping)

Absolutely nothing wrong with having other interest like spending time with kids, sports etc..... If you wanna watch E.Pac,Wpac,CPac storms or fish spinners. Have at it. Whatever floats your boat but to suggest that volume on this board picks up with a storm threatening the CONUS is just because people wanna see things smashed up is ludicrous. I owuld say most are just fascinated with Hurricanes but have limited time to track them so they focus on just CONUS threats.

Exactly. I still follow fish storms, but not nearly as closely.

People really don't get interested unless its a major threatening the US. Probably because it either worries/excites them, and they then feel the need to post.

New England kids should be all over this storm. The rare expanding Canadian ridge scenario may give parts of New England a chance to be in the cone. People up there are probably beginning to wonder why seacoast towns have buildings with hurricane shutters and what those funny looking hurricane lamps were for in the antique shops.

Florence has clearly been a dud. Thus, am not tracking attm, though will start tracking more seriously when it ramps up.

'cept Florence may threaten Bermuda and Atlantic Canada....not quite a fish.

though if i were planning a surfing vacation and couldn't get out west, early next week would be the week to go to the Jersey Shore. BUmmer I have a bunch of annoying public hearings to go to...


nimbus I didn't hear about the canadian ridge expansion...that's worrying.
