Brazil Gets Hit by Extratropical Strom with Cat-1 Winds

Huge extratropical storm hits Brazil
Perhaps the most damaging storm in the world this September was not Ernesto in the Atlantic, John in Baja, nor Ioke on Wake Island. Brazil had an usually intense wintertime extratropical cyclone bring wind gusts to hurricane force along the coast of Brazil's southernmost state, Rio Grande do Sul, on September 2. Winds of 101 km/h in that state's capital city of Porto Alegre tore roofs of of houses, downed trees and powerlines, and caused power outages to half a million people. Luiz Fernando Nachtigall, Chief Meteorologist for MetSul Meteorologia Weather Center, sent me a link to some damage photos from the event. After the wind event, the storm brought the most widespread snow event in Southern Brazil since 1994. It snowed in 62 cities.

Even converting from a 10 minute average 101km/h winds are not quite cat 1. They have stated elsewhere however that they believe there were gusts to 120km/h which is hurricane strength, but obviously not a sustained wind. There is a larger sat image and more links here.

These storms always seem to slip just south of us here... This winter was rather quite quiet indeed.Except for the snowfalls up country.Only had max winds of about 55km/h sustained (Although I guess we do get a few big systems come through late sept/oct stll)... But I`m assuming we won't see another storm like the storm of May 1984 where we got winds gusts of 180km/h (I wasn't born yet so I don't remember it) Last decent storm I remember was 2001 with 140/150 km/h gusts...
