There was data before hitting florida west coast from recon that said the winds where around 130 mph. But the nhc did not think that was good.

Perhaps they are using a lower reduction or they are going to wait for the 5am advisory to lower the winds.

Wxman1 nailed it in the recon discussion thread. Why downgrade now if you beleive it is strengthing. Just causes confusion. No one will mind if they lower the winds at 5.

Florence is going to have to do some hefty duty strengthening if she wants to become a CAT 2 cane. She might look big and mean but by actual data confirmed by Recon now shes nuttin but a weakling at the moment. This storm is as screwed up as Ernesto.

Everything about her looks pretty good now, why isn't she strengthening?

um they havent sampled anywinds near the center i think they are trying to find out how big the windfeild is first. Because they have been on the outer fringes mostly.

Yes they have tested the areas where the strongest winds should be.

I see they have been riding the periphrey but earlier they made some center obs, and they were not all that. My point was what is inhibiting it from some solid deepening?

Honestly, and this is from an amateur, but I would say size... and the reason is simple, it's physics. It will take more juoles of energy to deepen the entire thing, but once it does, an extremely large category 2 hurricane to me is just as devistating as a compact 4.

Wilma was a super tight thing less then a few miles wide. She was amazing watching it bomb, then half this board mess there selfs when the recon got into her that morning.

I mean not the system its self but the wind core/center. Wilma rainband/outflow was much bigger!
