Reporting Live from Bermuda..howling winds this am

#1 Postby bdabye » Sat Sep 09, 2006 10:13 am

Figured I'd better jump on board and give some updates as the storm approaches. We're abuzz with preparations, after Fabian 3 years ago, people are not taking any chances
Lots of high clouds moving in, hot and muggy. (why can't it be cooler when a hurricane approaches, it would make preparation much easier)
Large swells have been pounding South Shore since this morning, shark oil is cloudy and silk spiders have gone low...all sure signs of an impending tempest
I think we'll be alright though, our houses are all stone and rebuilding codes have become tougher since Fabian....we're used to this
I'll try to provide updates as often as possible
Wish us luck

Calm ended

#11 Postby bdabye » Sat Sep 09, 2006 6:07 pm

Light rain and drizzle most of the day, thickening clouds, calm (before the storm) started around 3pm now 8pm and winds have quickly picked up from the ese to about 10 - 20 kts, I believe it's the start and all downhill from here on in. We'll have a nice dinner and get some rest....going to be a long (extended) weekend

The shark oil and spiders have long been rather accurate forecasting tools (and therefore kind of a tradition) on Bermuda. This was discussed a while ago - here's the thread, also bdabye's: http://www.storm2k.org/phpbb2/viewtopic ... l&start=20

Best of luck, and remember that in areas with good building codes, the most dangerous time is often after the storm when people start to clean up downed trees and other debris.

All of the above-- hunker down, stay safe, and sending prayers your way. I hope it's not quite the tempest they're forecasting. Good luck!
