If you are being fair or not, earthquakes don't happen in the gulf or in Florida. This is to date an extremely rare event. I think there will be reams of scientific study to follow this event. I think it will be studied along with the February quake south of Louisiana.TampaSteve wrote:Stormavoider wrote:sfwx wrote:Earthquake History of Florida
This could be taken in two ways.
1. It's not the first time Florida has been shook.
2. This is the first time in modern history that Florida has had a seismic event.
To be fair, this was not an earthquake in Florida. It was in the Gulf of Mexico. Now, a 6.0 centered under the peninsula would be a whole different story!

Yup...Florida is one of the most seismically quiet places on Earth...and let's all hope they stay rare and relatively weak...just like the storms in the Atlantic basin so far this year...

I felt it too this morning. Thought it was really, really strange. Then I thought, nah, someone's blasting or a plane was too low going supersonic.
Then I got home, turned on the news and wow.
Time to move...

If you drop a bomb from a plane it will cause the ground to move and this is called a microquake. Earthquakes are just movements of the earth. This was certainly an earthquake.
Was it different from others? Perhaps. We do not know if there is a faultline there or not, because the area hasn't been investigated. That still doesn't change the name of the phenomena.

Yes, it WAS a TRUE earthquake! The seismic record of the event shows that it originated in the Earth's crust under the Gulf of Mexico, so I don't know how much "truer" it could be.

You mean there wasn't a KNOWN fault line there!
The Northridge quake in 1994 occurred along a previously unknown fault line in Southern California. It was very much a true earthquake...and I should know...I was there...not fun, not fun at all...
