I don't necessarily agree with jumping right in and becoming "one" with the animals - I think that the wild should be left wild with the least amount of human interaction as possible. However, we do need more Steve Irwins in this world to help protect the wildlife and keeping their habitat safe.

A MEMORIAL service to celebrate the remarkable life and times of Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin will take place at 9am next Wednesday (September 20) at 'The Crocoseum' at Australia Zoo on the Sunshine Coast. ( 7pm Tues Sep 19 US and Canada Eastern Time).
Steve Irwin's close friend and manager John Stainton and father Bob Irwin announced details of the event at a media conference held on Brisbane's Sunshine Coast at 11am this morning AEST.
The details were contained in a written statement by Terri Irwin read out by Bob Irwin.
They said that after negotiations with Terri Irwin, who was too upset to attend the media conference, that the service would be held at the Crocoseum which was the family's wishes.
Australian iconic vocalist John Williamson, who was Steve Irwin's favourite singer, would definitely perform at the service, they said.
Williamsons' rendition of 'True Blue' had been Steve Irwin's favourite song.
They were hopeful that a live feed of the service would be telecast around Australia, and in Europe, the United States, and Asia.
Terri Irwin hoped to be up to speaking and daughter Bindi might be able to say a few words.
The statement acknowledged that the event presented enormous logistical and traffic problems, but it would have been Steve Irwin's wish to have the memorial at the Crocoseum which Steve helped build himself at Australia Zoo -- and not at a Brisbane destination.
This was despite Brisbane venues making it possible for more people to attend.
They wanted to arrange for ticketing through Tiketek and payment by donations to Wildlife Warriers' fund which Steve Irwin founded.
Ticketing and admission was necessary as the Crocoseum only held 5,500 people.
The Irwin family also was talking with the Caloundra City Council to see if TV screens could be set up in public places so that other people could share in the service. It was hoped the service would be distributed through a live feed.
Mr Stainton previously has said the event would be as much a celebration of Steve Irwin's life as a tribute to Steve Irwin's remarkable life.
He said Tuesday had been ruled out because it clashed with the Victorian state funeral of motor racing icon Peter Brock.
Meanwhile, the mountain of flowers which has grown outside Irwin's Australia Zoo at Beerwah on the Sunshine Coast since Monday last week would eventually be composted and put on the zoo gardens, zoo media manager Peter Lang said.
Mr Stainton said every card and message would be kept for widow Terri and children Bindi, 8, and Bob, 2, to see, while the dozens of signed Crocodile Hunter khaki shirts would be kept for part of a permanent display inside the zoo.
Irwin's fans have not only opened their hearts but also their wallets in response to their hero's death, donating hundreds of thousands of dollars to help continue his wildlife conservation.
Michael Hornby, the executive manager of Irwin's conservation charity Wildlife Warriors Worldwide, said while he had yet to put an accurate figure on the total to date it was believed to be more than $1 million, with about 55 donations being made every 10 minutes.
However. it also appears that Irwin's death might also have brought out the worst in some people.
In another tribute to Irwin, seven-times Golden Guitar winner Colin Buchanan has penned a ballad – Goodbye Crocodile Hunter – saying that while they had never met, he was touched by his death and the depth of the sense of loss being shown by fans.

The Aussie naturalist, known as the Crocodile Hunter, was killed last week by a stingray while filming off the Great Barrier Reef. But the folks at PETA are neither surprised nor upset by his passing.

STEVE Irwin's wife Terri has broken her silence with an emotional thankyou for the support her family has received since Irwin's tragic death last week.
Her statement came as details of a public memorial service for Steve Irwin, to be held at Australia Zoo next Wednesday morning, were announced.
Mrs Irwin, who opened her statement with condolences to the family of motor racing legend Peter Brock who died in a rally accident last Friday, wrote: "I would also like to thank everyone for the overwhelming outpouring of love, support, and prayers for my family."
She described Irwin as "my soulmate and our wildlife warrior".
"It is my wish that the memorial service be held here in the Crocoseum at Australia Zoo which is where Steve would have wanted it to be," she said, in a statement read out by her father-in-law Bob Irwin.
Mrs Irwin and daughter Bindi, who was being groomed to take over from Dad, are expected to address the celebration of Steve's life.
While still too traumatised to outline her plans for the memorial service in person, Mrs Irwin
made it clear that the glamour and sheer size of mooted venues such as Brisbane's Suncorp Stadium and Entertainment Centre were just not Irwin's style.
"I cannot see how a memorial service for Steve would work in any other place than the Crocoseum . . . of which he was so proud," she wrote.
Friend and business manager John Stainton said the service would be held at 9am next Wednesday, September 20, at the Crocoseum and broadcast live on television worldwide.
The event would also be played on screens in places such as Brisbane and Caloundra.
Because of the venue's seating capacity, tickets would be issued through Ticketek via a small donation to Wildlife Warriors Worldwide.
Terri Irwin said she realised the Crocoseum had a limited capacity of only 5500 people and that it would pose an enormous traffic and access problem for police and security, but the venue was something Irwin would have wanted.
"I would therefore ask that everyone please bear with me in this wish and help me to make this happen," she said.

Yes. I thought he was on the boat that horrible day, but I could be wrong. I do know they worked together though.

From what i've read there was no provoking of the stingray. Steve Irwin happened to just be swimming above it. I can't remember where i read that but i did find this. Peta should research before spouting their mouth off.

Irwin's father declined an offer by Australian officials for a state funeral in honor of the beloved Crocodile Hunter. "He's just an ordinary bloke," said BOB IRWIN, adding that Steve would want to be remembered that way.
On Saturday, a small group of close friends and family attended burial services at Irwin's Australia Zoo.
Steve Irwin was tragically killed on September 4 when he was stung in the chest by a stingray. His longtime friend and producer, JOHN STAINTON, said that Irwin was shooting some light footage for a new TV show starring his young daughter, BINDI SUE, at the time of the stingray incident.
After reviewing the videotaped footage of Steve Irwin's last moments, Australian police determined that he did not intimidate or threaten the stingray that killed him.
Irwin reportedly encouraged his film crews to tape every moment of his wildlife adventures, even if he was in trouble. The Discovery Channel says it will not show the footage of the fatal encounter.

PETA does so much damage for what it a very worthy cause. Why does anyone take them seriously anymore?
I wish they would just go the way of the dodo, so that organizations like the Humane Society of the United States and local animal shelters could do what they need to without these people hurting their cause.

Yep, well said! They could very well be a positive thing for animals. As time goes on though, they get worse and worse. This latest was the last straw. IMO, it is too late for them to turn it around. What is sad is the pull they used to have.
