Wal-Mart Will Phase Out Layaway Program
PR NEWSWIRE
BENTONVILLE, Ark., Sept. 14 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Wal-Mart Stores , Inc. (NYSE: WMT ) said today that, because of declining use and increasing costs, the company will phase out its layaway program as it expands other financing options. Customers will have until November 19 to place items in layaway for this Christmas season and merchandise must be picked up by December 8.

"Demand for layaway service has declined steadily as consumers turn to other options, such as online shopping, gift cards and no-cost credit alternatives," said Pat Curran, executive vice president, store operations, Wal-Mart Stores Division. "To assist our customers, we are offering one last opportunity to use layaway service this Christmas season."

At the same time, Wal-Mart is working to offer customers new payment options. The company already has zero interest offers for 6 and 12 months for current Wal-Mart cardholders. For the first time, customers who apply for a new Discover or Wal-Mart Credit Card will receive $20 cash back when they apply at the register and purchase at least $100 on their card the same day.

Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. operates Wal-Mart Stores, Supercenters, Neighborhood Markets and SAM'S CLUB locations in the United States. Internationally, the company operates in Argentina, Brazil, Canada, China, Germany, Japan, Mexico, Puerto Rico, South Korea and the United Kingdom. The company's securities are listed on the New York and Pacific stock exchanges under the symbol WMT. More information about Wal-Mart can be found by visiting http://www.walmartfacts.com . Online merchandise sales are available at http://www.walmart.com .

If ya haven't heard this yet.. here it is..

I also have 2 other tidbits without an article to back them up. But I have heard them both at work this week.

1. Wal Mart has supposedly now invoked a "salary cap". That's right. If ya get to a certain $ amount for being there a long time.. You will no longer be eligible for raises or merit increases.

2. New dress code. :grrr: I certainly don't like this 1. Apparently casually wearing your own clothes with a vest on top is out. A Wal Mart polo with Khaki's is in. I hate khaki pants  and I hate the fact that I will become "uniformily sound" But.. maybe I will adjust..

Well the new CEO is the cause of all this. Walmart is going to heck in a handbasket. What a dang shame!

I said this in LaPlaces promotion thread a while back. I warned you both that this was coming. It is not going to get any better. They put the caps in place to get rid of long term employees.

Oh and you are only issued one shirt, while the store manager and assistant manager both get 7 shirts a piece.

Wow, I find it hard to believe they are cutting the lay away. I guess this a ploy to get alot more people to be a card holder. I guess if you can pay it back in a timely manor it would be the same as lay away. I never have used lay away but 2 of my best friends use it every Christmas to buy for thier kids. My motto is....if I don't have the money to buy it then I just don't get it then. Probably why at 33 YO I still don't have any credit cards. Although I should get one just to have in case of emergencies.

Figures, they run "mom and pop" out of business in small towns like mine and then they "put the screws to ya without a KISS!"....yet ANOTHER reason why I dispise this organization with a PASSION, I'm still driving to Flagstaff once a month to shop, I will NOT shop "that" store EVER again, PERIOD!

There, off my my soapbox LOL! Uniforms are a GOOD thing, after seeing some of the employees at our super hellmart, I don't blame 'em....some are dressed like, well, no other way to say, scumbags!! Dirty clothes, unshaven, unbathed, some dressed in "gang attire", it's time they clean up their act, not that it matters to ME cuz I no longer will step foot in that joint

You have not been there long enough to put your heart and soul into that company. As soon as you that is when your tune will change. I know of several people who have been with Walmart for 10 to 25 years and are being done this way. You are a 3 week employee, give it some time, but I do wish you all the best in your new job.

That's right Sis

As far as the salary cap, that's a fact....my son who works for "them" worked his way up the ladder and is now the Tire Lube Express manager at the Super *ellMart in Prescott Valley Az. and he was informed just last week that he's capped out, 4 years there and he will NEVER make more than $10.75 hour :x now THAT'S the way to treat a loyal employee isn't it?

I went into our local wally world 2 weeks ago just looking for something that NO ONE on this mountain had and the store was EMPTY and I do mean EMPTY...talked to a friend of mine who works there as the 2nd mgr. and he said that they are down 150-175 EMPLOYEES  and that they got written up by their DM for the store being in such LOUSY condition....they cannot get ANY HELP  with working conditions like these, why SHOULD anyone want to work there? They have ads placed in the local paper AND....the Arizona Republic in PHOENIX for crips sake, now WHY would they advertise for help in PHOENIX for a store up here? Are people REALLY going to MOVE up here to work at Wally World  If Wally would pay their moving expenses "NOT" ...if they would pay $15-$18 hour "NOT"

As I stated, this store has NO help!! They only have 15 cashiers, that's a FACT, and this store USED to do 500-600 THOUSAND $$$'s a DAY...YES, a DAY...this USED to be the busiest Wally world in the west and at CHRISTMAS, phffft...you can't get NEAR that "joint"

I realize that most people in todays world HAS to shop there due to their "cut throat" pricing....and it IS cut throat pricing, and I understand that, I've just been SO blessed with good fortune that we are one of the few that can afford to drive 2 hours to shop.....

I didn't even know you could do layaways at Walmart.
Hmmm...maybe Walmart Canada is different, though I don't know for sure.

Oh me too. And I do shop there. I was referring to employee issues and how they are changing Walmart.

They are using some stores as "pilot stores" (test) as to how this is going to work. Well in this test store, they have something now called "attendance tracking" If you are tardy you will receive an unapproved. If you are sick and have to go to the doctor, you are unapproved (even with a doctors excuse). If you are tardy 5 times you will be terminated, no matter the excuse. If you have to go to the doctor, you have to let management know 3 weeks in advance. If you request a day off, unapproved.

If you are a level 1 employee, the cap also applies to you.

Sounds like they're trying to bump inventory turn numbers to look pretty for shareholders this holiday season. Evidence that Wal-Mart is starting to feel the pinch? One can only hope.

Hopefully, mom & pops will make a come back. They understand the nature of customer service where gargantuan global corporations do not. Mom & pops are more attuned to customer loyalty than they are with linear programming models and intangible shareholder value.

This is ridiculous. Employee turnover has got to cost a heck of a lot more than employee retention does... or have I slipped into an alternate reality where nothing makes sense anymore?

This sounds like a play taken directly from Home Depot's new management book. Time variance - where employees get gigged for utilizing a benefit: sick time.

I wonder if workers can weasel some pay increases in lieu of benefits, seeing as they can't reasonably use them anymore.
