This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

Who Does What In the Off Season?

#1 Postby Downdraft » Thu Sep 21, 2006 9:24 pm

Just wondered what everyone does once the season is over. I for one have discovered wilderness hiking. Doc told me to get more exercise so I joined the Florida Trailwalkers. 10 hikes in 5 state Forests and they give you a patch but the best part is you see great sights without theme park prices. Next?

spend even more time on my research.

Would like to have my Masters by the start of next year's season... assuming I get my work done by then

What off season? There's always a TC season going in at least two regions of the globe . . .

Well in the atlantic off season I tend to watch winter weather although i do not find it nearly as interesting as tropical weather. Of course there is other severe weather in the US year round to watch.

In the off season I stop watching the Atlantic, East Pacific, Central Pacific, and Western Pacific. I start watching the South Pacific, Indian Ocean (both North and South), and South Atlantic (not really). Other then that, I just continue what I normally do.

There's always Tropical Cyclones to watch if one wants to make the effort to do so and last year we had a couple of real hummers around Australia. For that matter, WPAC is only really down activity wise during the February through April timeframe. Locally, we have our secondary rainy season which can feature some bodacious winds.

Alongside tracking cyclones in the South Pacific, Indian Ocean, and maybe even the West Pacific, I track winter weather very closely. We get lots of snowstorms here, and I love snow, and, unlike hurricanes, if affects me personally, so it's even easier to track those. Of course, I also track winter storms in other areas of the country.

What is "Off-season"? Season is going round the year. And if there are no tropical systems to track I have time for my research about the countless tornadoes in Germany.

Countless TORNADOES in Germany?? I knew that they occurred everywhere in the world, but I thought they were mostly a US tornado alley problem..Do they cause a lot of damage?? Are F5s common?

This question seems to imply that keeping up with hurricane season is so time-consuming that our lives are noticeably different during it, than in the "offseason".

Some of us don't let ourselves get that caught up in it! (Except when an evacuation is necessary, of course)

THIS off season I'm catching up on some math classes most likely so I can go back to school and get out of my crappy job.

And since the Pacific is warm, I imagine we'll have quite a season down under.

Living on the East Coast I watch mostly Nor'Easters, and other winter weather systems; both onshore and offshore.

Also I'm a real cinophile (in essence I enjoy movies), and in addition love anthropology/history. These all occupy my free time during the tropical off season in the North Atlantic Basin.

I think you'd be surprised just how many do occur globally each year. Tv programmes tend to focus on the USA though so people get the impression they only really occur there.

I investigated a tornado last year in the UK which caused at least £40m of damage (US$76m). I can't speak for Germany though.

I don't have an off season becuase I follow systems around the world. My off season is when there is no tropical cyclone activity in Planet Earth!!!

I've also been under the impression that the two main areas where tornadoes usually occur are the Great Plains of North America (Central US to South Central Canada) and the area in Southern Asia south of the Himalayans (Between Northern India and Western China). Is that correct?
