By its declaration it automatically triggers the Government response and activates the National Disaster Coordination Board of which the President is Chair-though she had to chair the meeting via conference call from the Clark Special Economic Zone because she was stuck there when the strong winds hit Clark. Reports on the Inq7 site indicate 29 fatalities now overall with power out to much of Luzon. The storm was indeed the strongest to hit Manila since Angela in 1995.

Deaths from Typhoon Xangsane rise to 48 with dozens missing in Philippines

Canadian Press
Published: Friday, September 29, 2006 Article tools

MANILA, Philippines (AP) - The death toll from a powerful typhoon that cut across the northern Philippines rose Friday to at least 48 with dozens of people missing in floods and landslides as residents mounted a massive cleanup, officials said.

The financial markets, schools and government offices in the capital, Manila, remained closed for a second workday since Typhoon Xangsane slammed ashore late Wednesday.

Most of the deaths occurred in Laguna province, south of Manila, said Romeo Panisales, a provincial social welfare officer. At least 19 people were killed in landslides and flash floods in the town of Santa Rosa and another 15 in five other towns.

Another 29 people were missing in the same province.

The coast guard reported a yacht with at least six crew members was missing in Manila Bay while heading to the Manila Yacht Club from a nearby port. A crew member of another boat in Batangas province south of Manila also was reported missing when it sank during the typhoon.

Has Xangsane ever officially reached supertyphoon status? I remember reading that Chanchu earlier this year was only the 2nd supertyphoon ever recorded in the South China Sea, and now we've got this monster barreling towards Vietnam.

I don't think so. It peaked at 120kt (1-min sustained) I believe.

Looks like rapid intensification is occurring just before landfall; bad news for Vietnam:

Actually Xangsane did NOT reach 130 kt intensity in the Philippines. JT had a peak of 125kt (145 mph) while the reports from the stations in the Philippines suggest a lower intensity. The Weather Underground track map intensities are in mph-not kt.

Typhoon Xangsane Is Forecast to Strike Hue, Vietnam, by Noon

By Francisco Alcuaz Jr.

Oct. 1 (Bloomberg) -- Typhoon Xangsane, which left at least 61 dead when it hit the Philippines three days ago, is forecast to hit Hue, Vietnam, by noon, according to a U.S. Navy forecast.

Xangsane was 144 miles (232 kilometers) east southeast of the Vietnamese coastal city at 3 a.m. local time, moving toward it at about 10 miles (16 kilometers) per hour, according to a report on the Naval Pacific Meteorology and Oceanography Joint Typhoon Warning Center Web site. It will weaken into a ``significant tropical cyclone'' when it hits land, the forecast said. Xangsane had sustained winds of 105 miles per hour, making it a Category 2 storm on the five-tier Saffir-Simpson scale, according to forecasters.

As of last night, 200,000 people in four central Vietnamese provinces had been evacuated, the biggest such operation in 30 years, Reuters reported.

Reuters and Vietnamese newspapers said the typhoon was expected to bring rains that would cause flooding and landslides.

Xangsane is the 18th storm of this year's Pacific cyclone season. Last year, about 50 people were killed when eight typhoons and tropical storms made landfall in Vietnam, Nguyen Tien Toan, a senior official at the National Committee for Flood and Storm Control in Hanoi, said on Sept. 29.

Airports and airlines suspended operations, Reuters said. Still, Xangsane probably won't hit the coffee-growing area of Vietnam, the world's second-largest coffee exporter after Brazil, the report said.

Actually, landfall was closer to Da Nang rather than Hue. At 0300Z Da Nang was reporting 10 min winds of 63 mph and a pressure of 983 hPa.

Where is that Da Nang report from? I've been unable to find any METARs from there. I'd been very interested to see the full set of reports for there (If this exists) given the person I'm aware of out there is just south of Da Nang.

I picked the report up form the Weather Underground site. Da Nang has been reporting every three hours on the synoptic hours though they missed the 06Z Ob.
