He didnt realize the pony was tied to his truck????? Oh come on now.

I hope he gets whatever the maximum punishment is. And when hes sentenced they should tie him to the paddy wagon and drag his sorry arse to jail, just like he dragged that poor pony :grr:

I have a really stupid question...how the heck do you forget that a pony was tied to your bumper? Hello...you would have to walk either by it or towards it...so regardless you would have to see it...

I can't bring myself to read it. But I applaud you for getting involved Linda. I have to ask also, how can you forget a pony is tied to your bumper? I read the replies. When I have the guts to read the article I will. Child and animal abuse just breaks my heart. Which makes me want to hug my kids and dog, now.

Bravo Linda.

Pony Dragged Down Highway 59 is Euthanized

The 3-year old Shetland pony police say was dragged behind a truck down Highway 59 in Baldwin County has been euthanized.
"Jet's" death has many asking for tougher animal cruelty laws in Alabama.
Dr. Tiim Stewart, of the Baldwin Animal Clinic in Summerdale, says exploratory surgery performed Tuesday revealed the severity of the injuries suffered by Jet, the pony who police say was dragged behind a truck on Highway 59.

Dr. Tim Stewart/Cared for Jet:"It was a unanimous opinion, once we discussed the nature of the injuries. The total injuries that we had, the number of injuries and the nature of those injuries that we had on Jet, that it would inhumane to try to be heroic and try to pull him through this."

Dr. Stewart hopes Jet's death won't go in vain. He wants Alabama's animal cruelty laws to be changed.
Right now, the law allows for felony charges only in cases where cats or dogs are involved.

Dr. Stewart:"We've never had a law to be able to prosecute somebody or to accomplish anything. It's extremely frustrating to try to help and our charge is to make a difference, our charge is to care and make a difference for the animals."

Representative Steve McMillan expects the state legislature to explore changing animal cruelty laws when they reconvene in March.

Rep. Steve McMillan/(R) - Gulf Shores:"I think you're gonna see more to that because we've had other instances in other parts of the state where animals were abused, at random, maliciously."

Jet was laid to rest Wednesday behind Dr. Stewart's new facility on County Road 32.
He hopes to someday put a monument at the location with the following words: "We're charged with their care: this monument erected in memory of Jet."

As for the suspect in the case, 46-year old Jerry Cruthers remains in the Daphne City Jail.
According to Loxley Police Chief Cliff Yetter, charges against Cruthers are expected to be upgraded to a felony charge of killing or disabling livestock, up from the previous two misdemeanor charges.

I live very close to where this happen. About 30 minutes south and worked close to the area. It is sad that someone would do something like this. The other thing that bothers me is that this said person was working at a small carnival in Loxley where small children go to and he had a record a mile long according to the local news.

And the excuse he used...He was drinking and he didn't know that the pony was behind the truck. That is the most lame excuse I have ever heard.

Believe me the vet tried everything he could do to save the pony.

I hope this does make Alabama and other States reword their laws to include all animals. They should call it Jet's Law

Well we found a loophole and he is still in jail for felony animal abuse.

Alabama does have a felony law on record for animals but it is only for cats and dogs.

Look for us on the news.

I've seen 2 recent cases in the Dallas area that are EVEN WORST. Although I'm not gonna say, because it's just too graphic.

Here is an update on the pony and the case. Bond has been denied! Way to Go Judge Bishop!

I forgot to add this. They said he drove the pony down HWY 59 to the BP station. I know where that is and I can't believe that the @@@@@ didn't hear the people honking their horn at him. Believe me this is a very busy highway through Baldwin County. It goes from I-65 to Gulf Shores and you go through several towns on it. People were probably going crazy trying to get this person to stop. I can only imagine.
