N. Korea tests nuclear weapon at Hwadaeri near Kilju: Defense Ministry
SEOUL, Oct. 9 (Yonhap) -- North Korea is believed to have tested a nuclear weapon in the eastern part of the country Monday morning, a South Korean defense source said.

"We detected the explosive sound from Hwadaeri near Kilju in North Hamgyong Province at 10:36 a.m.(KST)," a senior Defense Ministry official said, asking to remain anonymous because of the sensitive nature of the information.

But South Korea's military has yet to raise its alert level beyond usual defense situations, he said. The troops are still maintaining a Watchcon 3 surveillance status and Defcon 4 defense readiness status.

Damn we got tens of thousands of our troops just south of the Dmz. I pray to god now that they have this they won't use it.

Speculation as to the effects of this event on the upcoming elections (06/08) is treading close to a political discussion.

Well this is certainly bothersome.

I hold that MAD will keep things in check. I'm not worried about a nuclear conflict.

However there is something abhorent and wicked in a country like North Korea where millions suffer for the betterment of a small military cadre and elite. North Korea is further isolating itself from the world, and only the peasants who are in the service of the military will suffer.

I hope things change for the better. There should be one Korea, but there is only one system that works on its own merits. And it isn't Chinese funded despotism.
