Anyone Bought Eyeglasses or Contacts Lately?

#1 Postby JenBayles » Sat Oct 14, 2006 5:05 pm

I had to get both glasses and contacts last week. The old eyes are a'changing faster than I can keep up with anymore. My last round of updated scrips for both was 5 years ago. The cost was bad enough then, but this time, with the exam, bled me for about $700!! Is it that expensive every where else? This on top of about $4,000 for a tooth implant has got my Master Card cowering in fear in my wallet. Sheesh....

Bought a new pair of glasses in May. Costs were about $500. My insurance covered it though, so I got the money back two weeks later.

Usually, it only costs me about about $0 for my yearly eye exam. The health insurance pays for the one vision exam a year and has a discount for corrective lenses. Last exam was $108.00 for a year's worth of contact lenses and $20.00 for the co-payment. I also have a health reimbursement account that will reimburse anything the insurance company doesn't pay. So the lenses and the co-payment were reimbursed from there.

I'm going to do it eventually, but last year (just before the K word) I got new glasses and a new eye exam. Even with the deductibles and my insurance, I wound up spending about $400.

Looks like you're the lucky one here Lurker. I'm jealous! I figured on about $500 since it's been so long since I upgraded. I wanted to use the money for the eye surgery, but since my eyes are changing again, no can do. Any reputable surgeon will make you wait for one year to make sure of stability before doing surgery. Part of the problem is that I'm so incredibly, legally, blind that my contacts have to be special ordered, and now I need the progressive bifocals on the glass-eyes. Any little deviation and you pay through the nose. I really wanted to go with those really slim ones that don't show the rings on the sides, but it was another $100 a lens, so blew it off. Hopefully these will last me a while.

That is about what I paid for a years worth of lenses and new glass eyes a few weeks ago. I too have the account like lurker so I should get it all reimbursed though, if I get off my duff and fill out the paper work.

Between my glasses and contacts... its easily $400. (thats with the exam!) Unfortunately I don't have eye insurance so... that's all out of pocket.
