#1 Postby Bobbie Lee » Sat Oct 14, 2006 4:01 pm

How many hurricanes have we all been through? Over how many years? Why do we stay where we are when we get hit again and again? :P

Inquiring minds want to know.

I'm sure you'll get as many reasons as responses for "why" anyone stays in a storm-plagued area. With the exception of last year, most storms deliver more hype than damage, so we're willing to take the chance if we like the area for other reasons. I've been in Houston for 26 years, and the only major storm I've experienced was Alicia in August 1983. Tropical Storm (depression) Allison delivered the worst flooding I've ever seen here. Did everyone get scared and move away? No way! Houston will never be a tourist town, but for job opportunities and low housing and a host of other reasons, we're willing to risk it.

I have been through 4.. 1 in 1995 and 3 in 2004.. and for the 3rd answer.. I believe people like living on the coast despite the dangers.. They love ocean life or beach life, but I'm sure also know the risks..

I lived in the Philippines for a number of years-mainly because I was stationed there as a member of the Military. Four storms came directly overhead but I can't even begin to list how many brought Tropical Storm force winds (either sustained or gusts) to where I was at. What's interesting though is that here in SE AZ I've seen TS Force winds (sustained or gusts) from 4 EPAC systems-Newton G64, Raymond 40G60, Lester 55G78, and Ismael G40.

None.

And I'd like to keep it that way.

However, you have probably seen close to hurricane force winds from some of those humumgous North Sea Lows.

I've lived on or near the Gulf coast since 1953. The answer to your 3rd question is weather, weather weather. It is very nice most of the time.

I've been through(seen hurricane conditions in)at least 4 Hurrricanes-Flossy, Alma, Camille, and Alicia. There could be some more(low end CAT1 I am sure) that I don't really remember since there was a time I didn't follow the tropics like I do now. As far as Tropical Storm(s) or TS conditions, it is literally too many to count. Memorable, to say the least is Allison(2001), Rita(the scare more than the storm itself), and a few others whose names I really don't remember.

Tropical Storm/Typhoon Vamei is the only one. And that was a freak occurrence. No major weather we get here (unless you count the man-made haze).

No hurricanes or trop storms, but was seriously affected by remmnants of Agnes, in '72 and Ivan in '04. Also had remmnants if Isabel in '01 (I think).

I'll second Linda's, but add Betsy in '65. Obviously, though, Katrina far-far-far (did I say far?) exceeded everything any of the rest of 'em brought our way...

I have lived through every hurricane that has struck FL since Hurricane Donna. In the nearly 50 years of life I have lived, I remember several but Hurricane Donna is the one that made an impact on me. I live in Lakeland because it is close to where my family is , my parents' graves, my grandmother is still living there in Bartow. Another reason, is it is HOME I have never felt comfortable inother states I have visited, I always come back to FL and to Polk Co.

typhoons

#17 Postby Typhoon Hunter » Wed Oct 18, 2006 7:04 am

I've been through 5 in the last two years.

Last year (2005) got strong tropical storm conditions from typhoons Haitang and Matsa in Taiwan and Nabi in Okinawa. Made successful intercept into the eye of typhoon Talim is it made landfall in eastern Taiwan.

This year I intercepted the eyewall of typhoon Xangsane in Vietnam. This year has been very quiet compared to last year in terms of intercepting typhoons.

Hopefully, I'll be flying through them pretty soon as a member of the 'world famous' Hurricane Hunters!
