AP) An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.3 struck Hawaii early Sunday morning, waking up residents and knocking out power.

The U.S. Geological Survey also reported several aftershocks, including one measuring a magnitude of 5.8. No damage reports were immediately available.

The quake occurred at 7:07 a.m. local time, 10 miles north-northwest of Kailua Kona, a town on the west coast of the Big Island, said Don Blakeman, a geophysicist at the National Earthquake Information Center, part of the U.S. Geological Survey.

Blakeman said researchers were still trying to ascertain how many aftershocks struck and how large.

Blakeman said there was no risk of a Pacific-wide tsunami, but a possibility of significant wave activity in Hawaii.

Nothing, just magma moving below Hawaii, o maybe a plate shift. We're in a moving planet, and that doesn't mean exactly around our favorite star, the Sun!!!

Hawaii is a volcanic island chain. It's going to be prone to earthquakes.

Well, they're an active volcano islands and everything in Hawaii is thanks to the hot spot which hasn't cooled!!! So, I would say that earthquakes for them should be more common than hurricanes for Florida.

Note: Only 1% or less of the earthquakes should be strong ones. Minor to micro earthquakes are generally the usual.

Depends where did the major earthquake ocurred and/or if the aftershocks are near the volcano.

Remember, Mt. St. Helens erupted mainly do to a 5.1 earthquake even though she was getting ready to do so, the earthquake was the trigger.

Nevertheless, the volcanoes in Hawaii are not explosive when they erupt. When lava flows it acts like a very slow river. Oceanic volcanoes are usually very placid. Continental volcanoes are the ones that really explode and it has to do with the composition of the magma (I think silica is important here) and the amount of gas available.

According to the HawaiiChannel.com Kona took the brunt of the quake..."It was an unusually large magnitude and in an unusual location," one scientist said.
