Still not much to report, except for widespread power outages, even in Honolulu 150 miles away. A 6.3 is fairly significant.

The earthquake occurred off the Big Island (10 miles north-northwest of Kailua Kona, a town on the west coast of the Big Island) and there are reports that the epicenter was near western flank of Mauna Loa. The quake occurred about 155 miles to the southeast of Honolulu, the state capital, in Oahu.

Power outages and several landsides have been reported on the Big Island, Oahu, and Maui

The island of Hawaii is known as the "Big Island". The capital of Hawaii (the state, not the island), Honolulu, as well as Wakikiki Beach is on the island of O'ahu (the third island after the Big Island).


ETA: There are reports that the power is out at Honolulu Airport. They are on generators. No flights are leaving, but any incoming planes that can't be diverted to CA can land . . theortically.

CNN is simulcasting KITV. Sounds like the Big Island is a big mess, so far no major injuries or fatalities reported, but it is very early.

I have been to Oahu and it is about 140 miles NW of the big island. Honolulu is the state capital of Hawaii. Maui lies between the island of Oahu and the big island of Hawaii.

USGS is saying 6.3, but The PACIFIC TSUNAMI WARNING CENTER is calling it a 6.5

A lot of the news agencies are saying 6.3 but the civil defense message said 6.5. We will know in the next few days what the actual magnitude was.
