In a nutshell, and at the risk of sounding political (I'm not, really, as no politican advocates a good immigration policy) I just think that our immigration policy is extremely illogical. We need immigrants. Immigrants want to come here desperately. Yet we make it so difficult to get in legally, that they instead come illegally. Then we complain about the illegal immigrants and all the problems that occur because of the large number of illegal immigrants in the country.
It should be extremely easy for an immigrant to come here to live and work legally. Then it will be easy to give them social security numbers and tax them for their services. Also, it would prevent the exploitation of illegal immigrants which drives down all American wages. It would also make it very difficult for terrorists to sneak in with the masses.
The number of problems that can be solved with a simple change to our immigration policy is astounding. We should be asking why it hasn't been done.
I completely agree. Our biggest problem isn't solely the influx of immigrants... it's the fact they do so illegally and, therefore, they don't contribute to the American system as much as legal immigrants.
We can put a fence up and we can place guards, but the key thing to control illegal immigration is to reform the process. I say this because I am currently in the process of getting a visa for my fiancee. Before she can permenently move to American, we have to go through a long process (over a year) with numerous forms to fill out. By the time to calculate the cost of processing these forms (some are nearly $200 just to process the silly form), the medication examinations that are required (in both countries), passports, social security cards, etc, etc, etc... you're looking at a cost of over $1,000... and that doesn't include transportation!
Of course, my fiancee could just fly to Mexico, cross the border and be here illegally, but we're fighting the long wait. My point is, how many of these illegal immigrants (who come mainly from Mexico) have the money to process all of these forms. Very few.
