In a way, this is exciting. Well it must be horrible for the people in Hawaii, but it is exciting watching the coverage on CNN.

I'm glad this GFDL prediction didn't pan out - Major Kika would be right over them right now! Imagine dealing with a hurricane as well as the earthquake!

When was the last major quake in Hawaii?

That GFDL prediction is a little creepy there.

The last Magnitude 6 was in 1989.

It *appears* that this earthquake didn't cause any deaths or serious injuries, fortunately.

i think there will be a death or 2 because of the lack of communication and the lack of food and water

06 25 1989 Kalapana VII 6.2 0 deaths Southeast Hawaii almost $1M

Found a few local articles/links. I've vacationed twice in HI. Love it there - I feel for the tourists right now. In Waikiki alone, there are many skyscrapers, if the power is out, you'd have to climb all those stairs. And then I'm sure tourists wouldn't be stocked on provisions as a local would be. I'm praying there are no casualties and further after shocks.

Hawaii sits on a VERY active Hot Spot (hence the shield volcanoes). The Hawaiian Islands were all formed by the Volcanoes as the Pacific Plate moved over the Hot Spot. Currently right now, there are 3 active Volcanoes (Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa and Kilauea) on the Big Island and one underwater volcano SE of the Big Island. The other volcanoes are rather dormant compared to the 3 active ones.

Hopefully this isn't a sign of one of those dormant volcanoes waking up...

'Micro' quake rattles North Carolina

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) - A "micro" earthquake with a 2.6 magnitude rattled central North Carolina early Tuesday, the U.S. Geological Survey said.
The epicenter was about 3 miles east-northeast of Winston-Salem at 4:56 a.m. There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

Amy Vaughan, a geophysicist with the USGS in Golden, Colo., said earthquakes are rare in that part of the country. Since the quake wasn't very strong, no major damage was expected, she said.

About 150 calls came into the Winston-Salem Police Department after the quake, said police Lt. David Kiger.

"They reported a loud explosion and ground shaking," he said. "They just want to know what was going on."
