Well, it seems to me that Steve would have possibly lived had he not pulled the barb out. This man did not pull it out.

Wow, unreal and very freaky this happened so close to Irwins death from the same thing.

You are never suppose to pull out anything that puntures your body like that. Although I know its instinct to do so, but it will save your life alot of the times.

Correct. In my EMT class many years ago were were taught than in the case of an impaled patient many times ironically the object the person is impaled on may be putting enough pressure on blood vessels to keep the patient from bleeding to death. Even in the case of smaller objects you can do serious, and perhaps permanent, damage to tissues if you yank the object out. Any object that punctures the chest cavity or abdomen, no matter how small it is, should be left in place and paramedics should be summoned.
