Another good place to start is to start training employees that all customers are equal regardless of skin color. Too bad families cant do that with kids while they are young. Small wonder that a child. BLACK OR WHITE, that grows up in a home where the parents are blatant racists grows up to be a racist bigot adult.

Eh, can't really say I agree there. Then again, you said "blatant." My grandparents on my mom's side (particularly my grandfather) were somewhat subtle racists. Never came right out and said the N word, but there was some definite bigotry in how they spoke to, or about, or interacted with those of another race. My uncle carries some of that same bigotry with him. My mom, on the other hand, was the complete opposite. I think I realized that after I grew up and understood that racism exists...even in my family. I remembered my early years in Aurora, Colorado with classmates who were black, Native American, and Hispanic. She didn't try to separate me from them or teach me any kind of "supremacist" attitude or anything like that. I guess she taught by example, but there's nothing I can really point out as the "example" because I guess racism has to be taught and the omission of any teaching like that leads to behavior that's accepting of all races. Heck, I can't really put it into words because there were no words that were spoken. All I know is that there simply was no difference between me, my classmates, or anyone else.

Consider yourself lucky then.

My area is mostly black people. A lot of times, other whites will say horribly racist things to me because they think I'm "one of them." I'd say that in a typical week I hear the "n word" about five times.

And of course, saying those sorts of things is indeed teaching your children racism.

Whelp, I work in the legal arena. I see the law suits filed in this city. All I can say is that there are times when my jaw is still in my lap - some of them are so outrageous it is not funny.

To touch on the Nagin issue, and this was during the mayorial race, the NAACP was ready to "recount" votes if Mitch Landrieu had won. They didn't see the need to recount since Nagin won. hmmmmm.

And for the record, two friends that I consider dear to me are African American. I tend to look inside a person, not outside. Shame that doesn't work for all people.

As noted, conside ryoruself lucky. I have met a lot of racists who teach their children to be racist. Some are conscious of it and some are not.

The only people empowered to do anythign were the voters of New orleans. They chose to retain him and everyone moved on. There's nothing else that can be done. If everyone screamed and raved indefinitely for every violation of ethics and morality, nothing would ever get done.

Well, if they raved long enough, I doubt he would have been voted back in. By gosh if that had been a white politician saying that the media would have not stopped until him/her was ruined. Give me a break PLEASE!

This is absolutely not true. Children learn from watching their parents behavior. I have seen first hand things repeated by little children both black and white that made me want to puke. There are also subtle degrees of rascism. Take for instance my papa who I loved dearly. He was raised by his aunt and uncle who were share croppers and living with them was a former slave that had been freed as a child. My father loved this man, but he also had this attitutde that whites were "better" in some ways than blacks. It has to do with pride. When you are as low on the financial and social scale as they were, maybe it made you feel better that there was someone lower on the scale than you. My mother tempered our behavior and allowed us to realize that we didn't have to believe everything my father believed and that he was a good man to emulate and love as well as respect, but also that he was human and had flaws. This is a little off the subject but the cruelest remarks I have ever witnessed didn't have to do with anyones skin color but concerned obesity, and by so called educated intelligent people who would fight to the death for someones civil rights.
