Millons spent in a hurricane season that wasn't
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/15322222/
I know that the residents of the gulf coast are happy that nothing occured in terms of hurricane landfalls to give them a break from the 04-05 active landfall years. It was good that millons were spent to be prepared because it's better to prepared than to be sorry later. Also in the information at link above there are statements from Philip Klotzbach about why the forecasts were wrong, however we know what happened as el nino kicked in and capped the Atlantic basin.

That's a very interesting article, thanks for posting it. No reason why all those supplies won't be suitable next year...who knows what the 2007 season has in store!

Still don't think El Nino is the sole reason the season was like it was. If El Nino causes strong SAL outbreaks and crushing subsidence and higher than normal sea level pressure in the Atlantic then yes, El Nino rolled up the season. We had an El Nino in the 2002 and 2004 seasons- at the tail end, but had far more threatening activity than this season. Something else had to be going on this year, in my humble opinion.

Htrack,
It is well-known that El Nino causes increased MDR shear and reduced overall numbers of NS/H on average vs. not having an El Nino. What isn't clear to me is whether or not El Nino also tends to cause higher than average SAL, subsidence, and/or SLP, at least indirectly. I do consider that a possibility until IF and when it is proven to not be the case. Without stats to see or a scientific study to consider, I say that the atmosphere is far too complex for me to just assume it doesn't although that too may be the case.

Then there's that citrus spray cleaner guy who starting yelling as early as this March or April, "IF FRANCES, JEANNE AND WILMA DIDN'T CONVINCE YOU TO BUY A HOME GENERATOR..."
I only thought that commercial was in this area, until I happened to be listening to a Naples radio station, and heard the same guy say:
'IF CHARLEY AND WILMA DIDN'T CONVINCE YOU TO BUY A HOME GENERATOR..."
so, I guess he has them tailor-made for each market...
Still, it's not a bad idea to own one - as long as they are used properly when they are needed...

Which brings us to the obvious...If your generator runs on gasoline, make sure that the gas tank is drained, or at least a gasoline stabilizer added, otherwise come next season there will be a ruined generator..Follow manufacturer's instructions!!..also, if there is gasoline stored in cans (NOT a good idea,BTW) use it in a car now..Gasoline doesn't have a long shelf life, and is a fire hazard..
I bought a 15,000 kw whole (most) home generator for The Season That Wasn't..A good home-selling point, i guess...

It was the "season that wasn't" but geez did the gulf coast ever need a break! It was truly a blessing to have a quiet season. Just imagine how bad things might have been if another big storm impacted areas hit hard last year (especially Louisiana since the entire coast was devastated by storm surge from either Katrina or Rita). Let's hope for another quiet season for all gulf coast residents next year!

I think it would take a stretch of longer than a couple of years for "veterans" to forget 2004-2005...however,since one hundred new families move to Florida every second (it seems that way)..THOSE new people will probably have hurricane parties ( I personally know families that lost everything during Andrew and had them)..Those are the people we should worry about..

The 2006 hurricane season was the most over hyped non-event since Y2K and all the rogue computers that were going to launch a nuclear war. The gullible media swallowed the global warming crowd's wolf crying that 2005 was just he beginning of the end. In the end the media and the global warming wolf cryiers got a big pie in the face. 2006, all bark no bite.......MGC

MGC, sure, hindsight is 20/20. Y2K was a one time occurrence. It won't happen again. On the other hand, hurricanes making landfall in the U.S. will happen again (independent of the existence of global warming). I upgraded my hurricane preparedness this year and I am happy that all it did was collect dust. It should only do that for the next 20 seasons.... I don't care.
