Wild Pigs May Be To Blame For Spinach E. coli
POSTED: 8:46 pm EDT October 26, 2006
UPDATED: 8:51 pm EDT October 26, 2006
WASHINGTON -- Wild pigs may be to blame for the E. coli outbreak in spinach.
Investigators think the pigs might have trampled the fences meant to separate them from a spinach field. Once inside, they're thought to have spread deadly bacteria onto the crops.
California health officials say they've taken samples from a wild pig, along with cattle on the ranch and stream water. All come back showing the same strain of E. coli that was in the spinach that killed three people and sickened 200 others.
But no one is condemning the pigs just yet. They're still looking at three other ranches in the area to pinpoint the source of the bad spinach.
