Looks like the end for Studio 60

#1 Postby fci » Sun Oct 29, 2006 10:56 pm

Well, it looks like this show will be a goner.

See Fox article:
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,226092,00.html

I guess it is a shame that this show could not make it.
Yeah, it was a little self-important but it kept me interested.

Oh well...... :(

I'm a little surprised it may be cancelled before the 13 episodes are all aired. NBC has to pay a cash penalty if they do. The ratings have dropped every week though so I'm not totally shocked. Friday Night Lights gets a special airing tomorrow night and they've been apparently hyping it during Football tonight. If it does better than Studio 60(not convinced), then Studio 60 may never air again, certainly not on Mondays.

Mybe a hiatus and run the remaining episodes during "off-peak" time.

I think they spent too much on the show to just abandon it with episodes already in the can. If given a chance Sorkin might write the show's demise right into the storyline?

I'm kinda not surprised if it doesn't last.. The 1st thing I said when I heard about it was that I bet it wasn't gonna last lol

If it is indeed offically cancelled, then that's a shame. My family and I enjoyed Studio 60. We originally tuned in b/c Matthew Perry is in it but after the pilot ended, we knew we had found our favorite new show of 2006. We liked it that much (of course we all watch SNL too). That's a disappointment.

Yeah, I agree that I hate to see it go.
In fact, it's the only show that I get my wife to actually watch in spite of my watching several.

It seems that Sorkin writes to target a small audience who want cerebral shows where the action is in the words and not physical; shootings, sex etc....

Yes this show did appeal to a specific audience and took a lot of criticism. For one, the Christian bashing - which I believe people completely missed the point! The point I took was let people believe what they want to, don't cram it down their throats and don't get all preachy like. (my mantra, lol). Now I believe all of that, as long as you're a good person and do not infringe on the rights of others (9/11 comes to mind). But people criticized this show w/o even watching it - "oh yeah, that's the new show that bashes Christians?". If I missed Sorkin's message, please tell me!

Sigh....

I firmly believe that the US TV viewer does not want to think. That's too much work. They want to sit in front of the TV, remote in hand, pants unzipped b/c they're well, too tight anyway, and eat all sorts of snacks. While watching mind numbing shows. That does not prompt too much thought.

I really hope this show can somehow survive after all. The last episode with the elderly man who was a fan of Sid Ceasar and worked at Studio 60 years ago, was exceptionally good. I had chills watching those scenes.

From Media Daily News:

Fox Gets It Wrong, NBC Says 'Studio 60' Stays Onboard

A FOX NEWS REPORT THAT NBC's heavily promoted "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip" would be dropped from the schedule created a frisson Monday, but appears to be premature.

An NBC representative said in an email the show hasn't been cancelled. The rep wrote: "It is profitable at this point." In fact, the network has ordered three more episodes of the show.

"Studio 60" is scheduled to air next Monday in its usual 10 p.m. slot, although a boffo performance by "Friday Night Lights" in the slot last night--where it was placed for a trial run--could potentially change things. But a more likely scenario would be a time-period change for "Studio 60"--not a retirement--a source said.

"Lights," a poor performer on Tuesdays, could then be viewed as more compatible with NBC's freshman hit "Heroes" on Mondays. "Studio 60" has failed to capitalize on the strong lead-in from the top-10 hit at 9 p.m.

Barring a major meltdown--and last week, ratings were up over the previous week--next week's performance by "Studio 60" is not considered a make or break. But NBC executives are watching its ratings closely, and are frustrated by their decline.

Still, the show is averaging a 3.8 for the season in "live plus same day" ratings for the 18-to-49 demo. (Note: advertisers are only paying for the lower "live" ratings.) NBC executives believe that as long as the show stays above a 3.0, it will function, at the very worst, as a loss leader. That barometer gives it a shot of staying on the air.

One of the reasons NBC might stick with it is the show's upscale profile, which can make it attractive to advertisers: Through Oct. 8, it ranked fourth among all network shows in median income for the 18-to-49 demo at $66,000. Another is the show's perceived status as high-brow "West Wing-style" entertainment, a brand image that NBC continues to pursue.

Barring an unexpected breakout performance from "Lights" last night, executives also believe that even if "Studio 60" were replaced, it would be hard to put a show in the time slot that would outperform CBS' "CSI" Miami," which dominates.

NBC could call on "Crossing Jordan," which is expected to return on Fridays this fall, if either "Studio" 60" or "Lights" gets the axe. But "Jordan" finished last year with a 3.3 in the 18-to-49 demo, behind cancelled show "Commander in Chief." In short, it could be hard-pressed to significantly outperform "Studio 60."

Much of "Studio 60's" fate involves economic decisions by the network as far as the cost benefit of yanking a show when episodes are already shot. Thirteen episodes have been ordered, although the NBC rep wrote that it is unclear how far along production is on the allotment--so there could be a shutdown. As of next Monday, seven episodes will have aired.

The Fox report received heightened attention via a prominent link on the "Drudge Report" that was later removed.

It's got a full season(22 episodes, don't ask me why) but read the last part... it may not stay on Mondays.

Despite shaky ratings and some increasingly harsh critical comments, NBC announced last night that it would order additional episodes of the new drama “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip.”

The show has been one of the most talked-about new series of the fall season because it was the first new drama from Aaron Sorkin since he created the award-winning “West Wing.”

“Studio 60” began the season with strong ratings, but by the second week it began dropping. In the last few weeks, Hollywood has been filled with rumors that NBC was about to cancel the show.

But yesterday Kevin Reilly, the president of NBC Entertainment, concluded negotiations with Warner Brothers, which produces the show, and with Mr. Sorkin for nine more episodes, which will take the series to the end of the current season.

“I’ve spoken with Aaron and I’m very happy with his plans for the rest of the season,” Mr. Reilly said.

“Studio 60” is a backstage drama about a fictional sketch-comedy television show. Some critics have questioned whether a series can be sustained on that premise. Meanwhile, some NBC executives have said that they believe critics are hoping that the show and Mr. Sorkin will fail.

Mr. Reilly said, “Now we can just get going on with the rest of the season without all the heat and scrutiny.” Mr. Reilly defended the ratings for the show, saying that they had stabilized after falling for several weeks. “Studio 60” started out with more than 13 million viewers and had about 7.7 million viewers for its most recent episode.

“I have seen the word ‘hit’ being attached to shows with lower ratings than that,” Mr. Reilly said.

But he did not commit to keeping “Studio 60” in the 10 p.m. Monday time period it has occupied since the beginning of the season. That spot is coveted because it follows NBC’s newest hit, “Heroes.”

Mr. Reilly said that he would announce a new NBC schedule next week and that “Studio 60” would “not necessarily stay on Monday.”

Brent - a move is fine with us. I start my weeknights off with 3 hours of solid TV shows. So moving it to Sundays is okay with our schedule. Studio 60 seems to have a smaller but devoted following which will hopefully follow it to Sundays. However my daughter worries that since Heroes precedes it on Mondays, we may lose Heroes' devoted fans.

Either way, I'm just glad they got the go ahead for a full season of episodes.

Last night's show was exceptionally good.

Blah.

Forget what I posted... that was a fake schedule(oh if it had been true, it was awesome!). The official schedule just came out this afternoon and it stays on Mondays at 10. What a disaster. They would be #1 on Mondays(Deal and Heroes do really well) if they would dump it! The show is losing half the lead-in and is doing awful but it stays in the same timeslot?

Oh and Friday Night Lights goes to Wednesday at 8.

Just when I thought NBC was getting smart...

We're still watching, faithfully each week. It's getting better and better, IMHO. Matthew Perry and Bradley Whitford have this already built-in chemistry that makes you almost ask - Matt LeBlanc who? But I won't, b/c I was also a diehard Friends fan. Also, a main character from the UK The Office version is on S60 and we're enjoying the role she is playing. I know ratings are important but NBC isn't the powerhouse it used to be. If they have faith in this show and have given it a full season, then that's enough for me!
