The death sentences automatically go to a nine-judge appeals panel, which has unlimited time to review the case. If the verdicts and sentences are upheld, the executions must be carried out within 30 days.

A court official told The Associated Press that the appeals process was likely to take three to four weeks once the formal paperwork was submitted.

I doubt this will ease the situation over there since this will just make him a martyr and fuel the hatred of his followers. And since I'm not a big fan of death sentences, doesn't matter how gruesome his crimes were, this news doesn't really make me much happier.

Frankly I think the death sentance is the easy way out for anyone. I nice slow solitary rot in a nasty prison would be best imo. He will burn in Hell sooner or later. Then they can leave his cage open during recreation hour a few times a year as far as I am concerned. He would be the recreation of course.. now that is nasty..

Well it makes me happier. Saddam is no soldier, no great leader. He committed the most heinous crimes this century, rivaling Hitler. We will know know how many people perished because of this sorry excuse for a human being. The sooner he swings at the end of a rope the sooner the world will be a better place.

I know what a monster Saddam is. But in my opinion a death sentence isn't the best way to punish this man. A death sentence is something barbaric, something from ancient times, when we didn't know what else to do. Giving him a death sentence will just show that that time isn't over. It was a much better idea to put him in jail for the rest of his life. That way, we wouldn't make a martyr out of him (it's what he wants) and we would disgrace him terribly, because a life-long sentence is seen as a terrible humiliation in that part of the world.

Until recently, I was never a big fan of the death penalty myself. I still don't favor it for everyone. But for terrorists...that's a whole other story.

However, I feel it is important to point out that WE didn't sentence him to death. WE didn't try him. His own people did. That alone says a lot.

You're right, we (the western world) didn't directly sentence him to death, but we were nonetheless heavily involved with this trial.

I think that they need to execute him.

If they sentence him to life imprisonmet, there will always be the chance that his followers will rescue him and start it all over. Making him go away will have powerful symbolism. It will end one era and start a new one. Executing him will have some martyr value, but it would be worse if people are still hoping and plotting to have him back in power. It will also show that the new (still propped up) government can actually do something and it might help the citizens support that government.

I hope that after the excecution things start to get better for those people there.At least it's a good start for the new goverment that the justice system works.
