Bread Crusts, Heels, Ends, Butts.

#1 Postby coriolis » Sun Nov 05, 2006 2:49 pm

How come no one will eat them?

I found three bread bags in the bread box, each empty except for two crusts.

What's up with that?

I think it's mostly because mass-produced bread has lousy crust. It's like the bread has been covered in dried leaves.

The only time I like crust is on homemade bread.

Hubby likes the butts too. Too much crust on them for me, I don't eat the crust on the regular slices either.

i'm one of those people who trim the crusts off the bread and just eat the soft part. I don't like the texture and the way it feels in my mouth. Also saves eating extra carbs.

I eat the crusts on bread, thats where all the vitamins are in the bread. I never eat the butts though unless its the very last piece and I really want a sandwich. :ggreen:

I'm a big fan of feeding old left over bread (I always called them the "heels") to birds/ducks/geese. I consider it pure entertainment to watch the birds scramble and peck at each other for our scraps.

That's right, I'm the guy on the beach with 500 flocking seagulls making Hitchcock's The Birds look like an amateur film.

Not to rain on your parade, but I have heard and read that feeding bread to the ducks and birds is not healthy and can cause diseases that kill them. We buy a bag of bird seed when we go feed the birds now, and they enjoy it just as much. The kids love it, as you said the birds get all nutty almost scary if you ask me. Actually eat out of my kids hands. As for the ducks last time we feed ducks I went with my 4 YOs class. They had bought duck fed, because they were told not to feed the ducks bread either. Just a heads up you may be doing them more harm than good. :D

Yeah, bread in itself isn't bad for them, but it has no nutrients and fills them up while giving them no nutrients. A little tear off of the edge for a begging pigeon won't hurt anything, but several slices out by the feeder is a bad idea.

Ok ok...but I'm not strictly a bread man. I will often bring peanuts (high in protein) and some fresh popped popcorn. Now what segull doesn't love hot buttered popcorn?

I love the crust and butts of bread. Cajunmama, my Mom used to tell me if I ate the crust my hair would be curly too. lol It's straight as a poker!!!

Dry those crusts, ends and butts in a brown paper bag. When dry put them in a food processor with pepper, salt, onion powder, garlic powder, parmesan cheese, italian seasoning and parsley flakes. Dip chicken in beaten up eggs and dip in bread crumb mix. Deep fry!!!!!! YUMMO

That's almost how Mom always made her T-Day stuffing. That crusty hard bread would collect in a bowl under the sink for weeks.
