As x-y-no noted, however, there's significant risk of one of the Maine Republicans pulling a Jumpin' Jim Jeffords and switching sides if that happens. I doubt Lieberman's willing to take that chance of getting left out in the cold.

True enough, but he beat them at their own game. In this case, however, he'd be out in the cold for good, or at least for the next two years. I doubt he'd take the gamble when he's guaranteed a nice comfy committee chairmanship coming his way.

I'm not sure it was up to the election officials to tell voters that a candidate is dead. Usually it makes the news anyway, therefore, an informed voter would (hopefully) know about it before voting. As for the candidate winning -- there's really nothing wrong with that. It's better that way when you support the party taking that seat in office. Something similar happened in Houston during this election when Glenda Dawson died in September but was still elected. It was too late to pull her name off the ballot and put another Republican in her place. So, rather than vote for the living candidate, who was a Democrat, Republican voters still cast their ballots for Dawson, so that the Governor could later fill the vacancy by special appointment.

WALDENBURG, Ark. (AP) - Randy Wooten figured he'd get at least one vote in his bid for mayor of this town of 80 people — even if it was just his own.

He didn't. Now he has to decide whether to file a formal protest.

Wooten got the news from his wife, Roxanne, who went to City Hall on Wednesday to see the election results.

Absentee Florida ballot sent with precious stamp

MIAMI (Reuters) - A Florida voter may have unwittingly lost hundreds of thousands of dollars by using an extremely rare stamp to mail an absentee ballot in Tuesday's congressional election, a government official said on Friday.

The 1918 Inverted Jenny stamp, which takes its name from an image of a biplane accidentally printed upside-down, turned up on Tuesday night in Fort Lauderdale, where election officials were inspecting ballots from parts of south Florida, Broward County Commissioner John Rodstrom told Reuters.

Only 100 of the stamps have ever been found, making them one of the top prizes of all philately.

Courtney margin drops as town finds miscount

(Lebanon-WTNH, Nov. 13, 2006 Updated 8:10 PM) _ The election is over but the drama may just be starting in Connecticut's Second Congressional District. There have been some surprising results so far in the recount.

A recount in the town of Lebanon shows that Democrat Joe Courtney received 100 more votes than he should have, narrowing his lead over incumbent Rob Simmons.

In the town of Lyme, it was also discovered that Simmons was wrongly credited 40 votes because an election worker mistakenly wrote down the wrong number. That brings Courtney's lead to 109 votes.

One by one, each voting machine in Lebanon and each absentee ballot is being recounted in each of the Second Congressional District's 65 towns.

Barbara Major, Republican Registrar of Voters, says,"It's been right on the money."

New London, like most towns, has been right on or at least close to it. However, on Monday morning the gap between Congressman Rob Simmons and Democratic challenger Joe Courtney got a whole lot smaller.

Courtney beat Simmons by 167 votes on election night but it turns out one of the voting machines in Lebanon was misread.

Instead of 363 votes, Courtney received 263. That lessens his lead by another 100 votes and is increasing the hope of the Congressman and his supporters. Today at Simmons Campaign Headquarters in Mystic the news was welcomed with caution.

Chris Healy, Simmons campaign manager, says,"So we remain optimistic, hopeful, and prayer is a good thing.

"Does this make you more optimistic?"

"Well yeah but it could just as easily go the other way. So we have to make sure at every polling place there's an open transparent process and once there is and we get the numbers in then we'll know where we are."

Now, with the town of Lyme's votes added to Courtney, the challenger still leads by 109 votes.

Courtney was in Washington D.C. going through a orientation session for incoming representatives.

The last time there was a re-count in the Second District was 1994, when then-Congressman Sam Gejdenson narrowly defeated Republican Ed Muenster by 21 votes.

Towns have until Wednesday to submit their recount numbers.
