Winds running 25-35 mph here in north Austin but we've had gusts to near 50 mph. Wow, this is something else!!

In fact, local TV media is reporting that we had a fatal wreck in Pflugerville (just north of Austin) this morning that is being attributed to the high winds. Apparently the winds blew a traffic light out of the driver's sight line ... driver ran a red light ... and BOOM!

Same here Portastorm, the winds are unbelievable. Walking in this stuff is no picnic especially when the wind gusting close to 50mph. This has to be some of the strongest winds I have experienced from a non-thunderstorm.

That is very sad about the fatality. I have noticed that the traffic lights are twisting around everywhere and it is very difficult to see what color the light is.

BTW, it looks like the batch of clouds up near Dallas may be trying to push toward SE Texas.

Wow! This winds are kicking in downtown Houston. We are getting 50-55MPH winds between the skyscrapers. You hardly stand up and walking is almost impossible. This is pretty wild. All sorts of stuff flying around.

Yeah double D ... I grew up in NE Ohio and these winds remind me of some of the November storms that I experienced as a kid in the Great Lakes.

It's been a long time since I remember non-thunderstorm winds like this in the Austin area, that's for sure!

I wonder if this means that the storms this winter will be stronger than normal? A strong low like this in December or January mixed with cold arctic air could mean quite a winter weather situation!

I'm glad I am not having to fly to DFW or Houston today. It would be one bumpy ride going against the wind.

I am getting my strongest winds of the event right now! Gusts to 50+mph are ripping palm frawns and small branches, bulging windows in, shaking the walls, and when I stepped outside I was thrown backwards a good 3-4 feet by a sudden gust. I feel like I am in a tropical storm right now! It is scary.

just checked the current conditions at Fredericksburg and the wind is really howling.

NW 36 gusting to 53

Also the air is bone dry, the current dewpoint is -11. I don't think I ever remember the dewpoint getting that low. I wonder if that is a correct reading?

Chicago, eat your heart out!

Good gosh, it's crazy out there! Palm fronds and sand blowing all over the streets, loose paper and bags flying around, and gusts that come out of nowhere.

I can't imagine how much worse it is in Houston with winds whipping between buildings.

this wind is just crazy!!! i have several small branches down from my pine trees and the neighbors palm trees look terrible, they have palm tree fronds down all over their yard!! I am not surprised to hear about power outages... this wind is amazing! kind of feels like a tropical storm with no clouds or rain... kind of odd....

We've had some power outages down this way. Power has gone off twice for awhile since 11 AM. Have to think it's weather related.
