yeah, it is starting to look like it is moving south of east. I think the low may actually help veer that band into central TX before clearing. We shall see though. Going to be an interesting day for all.

The temperature in Fredericksburg says 34 by the NWS, but when I dropped my son off at school, the temperature from the car said 30. Either way with the wind blowing 25-30mph it is cold outside! :cold:

Front has just passed the Galleria area in the last half hour. Temps went from 71ºf to 47ºf in the span of 10 minutes or less here!!! Most of that drop was in the first five minutes with the temps dropping 5º each time the weatherbug updated. Haven't been outside yet and have no plans to anytime soon!!! Still no rain yet. Winds are 15-20mph with gusts to 30. Wind chill at 42º.

I am watching Brenham on weatherbug and the temp. is just nosediving there! They are currently at 31F. Keep in mind...Brenham is only a little way NW of Houston (closer than Austin). This was certainly not expected in that area.

(Update: they have actually risen breifly back to 32F. But the point is...they are hovering near freezing when they were supposed to be in the upper 30s to lower 40s right now!)

Well, considering we've been in the 70s and 80s the last few weeks ... this stuff feels brutal!!

When I woke up it was 37 degrees at my house around 6 am. It's now showing 32 degrees. Impressive cold air advection.

What is JB saying about the cold on Sunday? I noticed that the NAM brings a 1050+ high down the plains. At least it looks like we will have a sustained cold period for a while.

Portastorm, it looks like the upper level support is going to move a long the Red River Valley, atleast according to the 6Z GFS. So, I would imagine whatever falls down around the Austin area will mainly be freezing rain, possibly mixed with a little sleet. Unless of course, evaporational cooling cools down the atmosphere enough for there to be a change over to all sleet. I think it will mostly be freezing rain for the Austin area, though.

While looking at the 6z run, I noticed up here in NE Texas that temps at 850mb will be between -6 and -9 tonight while there is still ample moisture around. Maybe I will get a an hour or two snow burst that will leave a decent accumulation.

No change here in Galveston -- still 70 degrees like it was an hour ago.

But in Houston, the temp has dropped almost 20:

Camp Mabry in Austin is reporting "unknown precip" (a.k.a SLEET) at the current time:

Also, San Antonio is now down to 35F right now with a dewpoint of 32F, a windchill of 24F and gusts to 40mph.

There is a pretty good snow band west of the Austin area, if that can hold together it might give central Texas a little surprise. I think San Angelo is reporting light snow and that is moving east and southeast.

I dunno EWG ... I see no sleet falling here in downtown Austin. Camp Mabry is probably 3-4 miles to my west-northwest. I'm skeptical about that report.

HOWEVER ... the radar is getting busy and I wouldn't be surprised if we get some icing problems on bridges/overpasses before lunchtime!!

when I got to work at 8:15 in the Galleria area, the front hd not come thru yet and it was still 70's and humid.

I stepped outside at 8:35/8:40 to grab some food real quick and WOW - it dropped in a hurry with gusty N winds

Gonna have to close the dog door for a while here under the Bear Creek Dome - the wind keeps blowing it open. Dome wasn't quite strong enough to stop the front, but we only got a light sprinkling of rain, so it's trying! :lol:

I'm gonna have to get one of those weather stations I found for Azsnowman....

Portastorm you are probably right on that.

Don't trust those automated stations. As I pointed out last night with some of the DFW area sites, they start doing wacky things when temps get into the 30's. Often "unkown precip" is just some mist or something messing with the sensors, or possibly some mixed precip aloft but not reaching the surface.

It almost appears that the upper low is moving south on that radar loop. Is it just me or is it actually moving more south than forecasted?

latest Austin area forecast uses the word "snow". You guys may just be in luck of seeing some white stuff after all:

Today: Rain or freezing rain likely before 11am, then rain, snow, and freezing rain likely between 11am and noon, then a chance of rain after noon. Cloudy, then gradually becoming partly sunny, with a steady temperature around 33. Northwest wind between 15 and 20 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%.

At this point, I'd rather the weather behave since we're all at work or school! I don't know if its like this in Houston or Dallas, but when everyone lets out in Austin due to bad weather ... the roads become gridlocked, regardless of weather conditions and then a normal 45-minute drive home becomes a 3-hour ordeal!
