That is definitely cold Dean!!! Here in Houston we are going to see our second freeze in a week. Quite unusual for us since our normal first freeze isn't till around December 12th and we are on our third one for the winter season.

We are supposed to drop to 6º tonight. For us here in the Ozarks...that's mighty cold for December 3rd.

Saw quite a few single digit readings in OK/MO/IL where snowpack enhanced the radiational cooling effects which is mighty cold for anytime of the year. noticed a few locations breaking daily records by as much as 5º-10º, which can go to show along with a very cold air mass, what a fresh snowpack can do to reflect sunlight back into space and keep locations as much as 10º colder than surrounding areas with no snowpack on the ground ...

It has been quite an unusual fall season with all the variability during the calendar fall season. Although, my backyard has been below freezing, CHS WFO has not officially been below freezing thus season (which is likely to change after tonight's/tomorrow morning's expected low of 26º), despite the fact, back on NOV 21st, CHS saw the earliest snowfall on record, and officially the first thundersnow EVER for CHS WFO. The lowest temperature as of DEC 4th, 2006 for the fall season is 33º (which ironically occurred on NOV 4th).

Last night was our warmest night in the past seven. It was a rather "mild" -12F, much better than the -27F we had on November 30.

Just feel lucky that the Minneapolis-St Paul Metro area doesn't get near as cold as it does here. Not that that's any comfort.

haha, it won't be long before we see temps down in that range, definately by mid January, thing is we dont have much snow, maybe an inch at most, possibly getting another 2 tomorrow though. if it's gonna be this cold, we've gotta have snow, otherwise it's not worth it!!

True, but remember by then, we'll still get colder than Minneapolis/St. Paul ever does.

Around here the record low is -61F (Maybell), far colder than that of Minneapolis (or anywhere else in MN as nowhere in MN has never dropped below -60). In an average year we will get down to -31F, so -60 is rare.

The record low in Minneapolis is -34. In an average year you will get down to -22.

Unlike Minneapolis though, night temperatures are still cool even in July. Around here it has been 26 in July or as high as 102. Every July gets into the low to upper thirties (sometimes on the same days that are in the 90's).

There are only three places in the USA that have recorded temperatures both -60 or below and 100 or above. Maybell Colorado, Parshall, North Dakota, and Fort Yukon Alaska.

I was serious when I said it could be worse. (Actually here isn't as bad as somewhere like Fraser or West Yellowstone).

If you want snow, I have plenty you can come shovel off my driveway.


Out here, cold and snow aren't that bad though. Sure it can hit -40, but there are never anything like hurricanes here. One tornado a few decades ago, but it did very little damage. Usually low humidity too. No traffic jams (except for waiting for the elk and deer to clear the highway) either. Cold and snow isn't that bad. Things could always be worse. I could live in Chicago again or something. Ewe.

I like snow, but I could do without the 60-below temperatures! I will probably move to the NC or VA mountains someday.

Last night was the first hard freeze of the season! I have sort of a silly question. Whenever there's a hard freeze down here, sometimes they tell us to run the water a little bit to keep the pipes from freezing. What do people further north do about the pipes? I can't imagine they run their water all the time (and if they do, I'd hate to see what their water bills are like!).

Nope. River valley surrounded by mountains. I only live at around 6300 feet, but it's colder here in winter than in many higher elevations.

Our pipes are insulated, but you only have to run them when leaving the house. If you leave the house for more than a day, you have to keep them slightly running.

And I thought I had it bad Monday dropping to 14 degrees! Can't imagine being in the single digits in December, even though it's happened before (last time I remember was 1989).

the sewage pipes freeze anyways sometimes, especially up in northern Minnesota, if we dont get much snow, the snow acts like insulating and especially when it gets below 0.
