Survivor's Nate Takes on Jonathan, "Nancy Boy" and Flirty Parvati
by Angel Cohn
Nathan "Nate" Gonzalez was laid-back cool for most of CBS' Survivor: Cook Islands (Thursdays at 8 pm/ET), and was known for his charming use of the English language. With the larger Raro tribe merging with the Aitu tribe, all should have been fine for a few weeks. But the mutinous Jonathan switched sides (again) and caused Nate to go home during the Thanksgiving Day broadcast. TVGuide.com spoke with Nate about Jonathan's betrayal, his comments to "nancy boy" Brad, his fun lingo and "warm" Parvati.
TVGuide.com: Is your family OK? I can't imagine that watching you lose Survivor was a fun way to spend Thanksgiving.
Nathan: Uh-huh. It was very hard for Mommy. She had a hard time seeing her baby boy go out like that. It was a little emotional.
TVGuide.com: That was not a nice way to go out.
Nathan: That was the worst way. I knew the other four [from Aitu] were going to vote for me, and that my four stood by me. It was just that one vote, that one person.... So it is real hard.
TVGuide.com: All because of that sneaky Jonathan.
Nathan: That sneaky caca-head.
TVGuide.com: You seemed like you were annoyed with him way before he voted you out.
Nathan: Oh, yeah, I knew he was up to no good, that he was playing the game. When I was kidnapped, we never really spoke strategy. And he never wanted to work with me, and I never wanted to work with him. I felt Ozzy out, and Candice told me she wanted to work with us again, and that she missed Adam. I knew she was cool. So for [Jonathan] to come over made me question why, and he was just rubbing me the wrong way. "I just saw you betray these people, why would you think I'm ever going to have your back?" We kept him around, but I voted to keep Jenny, and I stood by [the tribe] in voting out Brad. After seeing Brad play the game, he would have done the same thing. He would have "peaced out" if he knew [someone] had the idol. Rebecca, she was probably one of my closest friends out there. But this game is not about friendship; it's about doing what is best for the team. At that point she wasn't doing enough for our team to keep her, after losing four challenges in a row.
TVGuide.com: You seemed very discouraged about the fact that you kept losing.
Nathan: We finally had a formula that worked before that mutiny. We knew our strong points. Then that morning [after the wrestling challenge], it was like we started all over again. We had Jenny questioning how close Adam and Candice were, and Jonathan... lord knows what he was thinking coming over. There were a million things going through our minds, and we needed to focus on winning. I'm going to say that their poop-bad karma for betraying Aitu at that mutiny killed us all. It was like a virus, and it spread.
TVGuide.com: Do you feel better watching the show, knowing now that Yul had the immunity idol?
Nathan: No! I'm upset with the fact that they didn't show us talking about the possibility of him having the idol.
TVGuide.com: So you did speculate about that?
Nathan: Of course! I said to Adam and Candice, "Let's go for Becky possibly," but they were so scared by how much Jonathan wanted to save Yul. They were talking so much that we wanted to break that up. I don't know if showing that would have made a difference, because I think if we voted for Sundra or Becky, he was going to play it anyway. It was a crucial point to keep the numbers up.
TVGuide.com: I really enjoyed the fun lingo you brought to this season.
Nathan: My lingo. [Laughs] Sometimes I lost my mind. The "Cut them up like poop" — I was like, "Oh, god, did I say that?" I was just out there being myself sometimes, talking off my head and being goofy, but I had a hard time watching it. You just realize where your head was out in the game.
TVGuide.com: Brad told me he was upset that you called him a "nancy boy."
Nathan: [Sighs] I've been hearing that.
TVGuide.com: Any regrets about saying that?
Nathan: At the end of the day, considering Brad's actions toward not swimming and me calling him out, no, I don't regret that. The fact that I called him a nancy boy and it offended him — I want to take that back, because I'd never want to hurt him. He's a dear friend, and I like the guy a lot. I think people made a big deal out of it because of his sexual preference. I'm not a homophobe. I was an ally of his when I knew he was gay. We were cool. If Adam had done the same thing, I'd have called Adam a nancy boy. If I offended homosexuals or Brad by saying that — if they think I was directing it toward his sexual preference — then I am going to apologize, because that is not my style. I would have called him something else, a "f--k-off" or something else that didn't [hint at] his sexual preference. I texted him [after my elimination] and said "I'm sorry," and he said it was cool. But I've heard comments that he wouldn't want to hang out with me, and that is too bad because I thought we were close friends.
TVGuide.com: You seem like a mellow guy. What was your strategy?
Nathan: To be mellow at the beginning, and to be a provider. I am highly opinionated, and I have a strong personality. So I kind of wanted to play under the radar but wanted to be a strong ,vital asset to my tribe. I wanted to work with the females because I knew they would need me, and I would need them at a point. There is a point in this game when guys turn on guys.
TVGuide.com: That sounds like a good strategy, seeing as Parvati didn't seem to mind flirting with you.
Nathan: [Laughs] No. She likes flirting, and that was like my medicine out there. She kept me so sane and real warm. You need that out there, where you are going so crazy and you miss your family and you have so many emotions. She was cuddly and tickly, and that's just healthy. You need to be affectionate. I'm not going to be, like, rubbing up on Adam. [Parvati and I] weren't as intense as Candice and Adam. Straight up, I'm not going to be sucking face when I haven't brushed my teeth in, like, 30 days, but to each his own. I always tease him, like, "You nasty human." [Laughs] But it is all good. Parvati was a warm person out there, and I have nothing but respect for her.

WOW. Intense episode.
I never thought I'd say this but GO JONATHAN! Candice is gone! She was such a b*tch, along with Adam and Parvati. They got outplayed and now they whine about it endlessly. Ugh.
Yul showed off the idol to everyone! Heh. The Raros didn't believe Jonathan when he told them.
Jonathan cleaned up at the auction... hot dog, fries, beer, and a whole pizza!

Candice had a lot of nerve to whine about Jonathan not sharing food, when she did nothing to earn it.
And then to say what a "fabulous" experience it was to be in the game, when she whined on Exile Island FOUR times? I'm glad she's gone.
Parvati might be glad, too -- now she's got Adam all to herself.

Johnathan survives yet another Tribal Council! Wow, I loved Candice's look when she was voted out. Did you all catch her holding hands with Adam - gag! Yep you're right Bobbie, Adam's not going to be cold, not with Parvarti there. Her name reminds me of Cheese, Johnathan's voice reminds me of Alan Alda (thanks to whomever noticed this first!), and Candice reminds me of Daryll Hannah. I almost have the names Harvarti, Alan and Daryll in my head now and not their real names! LOL Did you all also catch Nate's reactions? He was loving the discord. And you could tell he was fully expecting Johnathan to go last night. I loved Jeff's impression - an allliance of 3, an alliance of 4 and then there's Johnathan! Too funny.......okay, enough for my comments. Onto the TV Guide Friday Commentary. Oops, almost forgot did anyone catch the footage near the last 15 minutes of the show, of the large fish hiding under rocks, belch/throw up another fish? We about lost it when we saw that! OMG......

Survivor: Cook Islands
by Rhoda Charles
November 30, 2006: King Rat
This show is so good I am almost moved to write poetry and yet there are no words to express how much I'm enjoying Survivor: Cook Islands. Alas, I will attempt to recap the happenings at the Aitutonga tribe.
In the aftermath of Nate's departure, Parvati was outspoken about her disappointment in Jonathan. She was so upset with him that she could vomit on his face. Now, she's billed as a boxer. Would a right cross not suffice? Parvati did make me laugh, though when Jonathan flat out told her that "Yul does have the idol" and she still did not believe him. Hilarious. Perhaps, Nate should have left his glasses behind.
Like I should talk. For weeks now I've watched the rat footage and mused at why the show always cut to Jonathan afterwards. Perhaps Burnett is trying to tell us something? Um, yeah. If you come away with anything from this episode it's that everyone thinks Jonathan is a rat. He may very well be, but I'm thinking this rat's going to come out on top – at the end of Day 30 Probst was snuffing out Candice's torch and not Jonathan's.
It was close. After that auction, where Jonathan ate, drank and made merry in a most obnoxious manner, things were looking bad for the man who bought almost of the food while forcing up bidding prices on items he did not want. The Survivor auction is always interesting. People blindly vie for food rewards with their five hundred dollar purses in hopes of getting a meal from the mainland. To my recollection, this was the first time a bath was put on the block making me wonder how pleasant things really are at the camp.
Overall, the auction was strange. Out of nowhere Becky gets all determined to keep Candice from winning the mysterious "power" item that Jeff was selling. Immediately, Yul and Adam stake their women and drive the bids up. Becky won gaining Candice's cash and the power to send someone immediately to Exile Island. Like we didn't see Candice's fourth visit coming. It's almost getting sad seeing her go. Almost.
Before Candice exited, Yul got all cocky and pulled out his idol for all to see (and Parvati to authenticate). There is no place for that in this game. Now I'm all worried Yul's going to screw up and get played. Follow that up with his new passion for wooing potential jury members. Yul may be assuming too much in this game where fortunes keep changing. Just look at how Adam won immunity and the Aitu four were all out of the running by the end of the first round. With Jonathan's record, Aitu could have been at risk.
The tribal councils this season have truly been the cherry atop my sundae. Coming off of a tension filled dinner where the hard-workers shunned the cool kids and Candice and Jonathan exchanged many a word, tribal council was heated. Nate enjoyed watching the fireworks. I surmise from his gesticulating that it was hard for him to merely observe all of the calling on the carpet. In the end, there was no group hug but Adam and Candice shared what Nate might describe as a "dirty, stanky, whack" goodbye kiss. And like Parvati, it almost made me want to vomit.

Well I'm no Jonathan fan, as I do think he has been very obnoxious the last couple episodes. However, Candice was much more of a jerk than Jonathan was. She may be all smiley and have this spirit of the game, but when push came to shove, she was whiney and really quite demanding from others while sitting on her butt doing nothing, apart from making out with Adam. As far as being upset with how the Aitus weren't sharing food, my take is, you three were busy cuddling and whatnot, you deserved what you got! Yeah, it's harsh, but maybe if they had either been working or been with the group, things could have been different.
I'm actually glad Yul showed them the idol; probably made the three of them look really stupid. Sorry, I have ZERO sympathy for the Raros, and I'm glad Adam and Parvati (P.S. Parvati, pot, here's the kettle when she called Jonathan immature and claimed to be twice as mature LOLOLOLOLOL) are about to be voted out.
But what I would root most for, even if the odds are stacked against it: Yul and Ozzy in the Final Two. Probably not very likely, but I'll be rooting for that til either one of them is gone or it happens!

Complaining about not getting food really bothered me. Maybe if they weren't so busy playing house in the tent and were actually paying attention to what was going on, they would have gotten up off their lazy behinds and did some work. It's Survivor, not a vacation.
I think the complaining about food stemmed more from the fact that they were upset they were outplayed by Aitu and Jonathan. Jonathan had told them Yul had the idol and they didn't believe him.

I recorded the CBS morning show with Candice on - did you catch that Brent? LOL Anyway, she looked completely different! Her hair was all one length, blown dry straight, very full, not wavy or curly. She almost looked like another girl! When asked if she and Brad were still an item, she hemmed, hawed around but finally said no, they're not. Explaining that it was so nice she could trust someone out there. Looked a little more than just trust to me!!!!

Survivor's Candice Talks About Her Lip-smacking Send-off
by Angel Cohn
If you've got to get your torch snuffed on Survivor: Cook Islands, there are worse ways to go out than with a big juicy kiss from your hot island fling. Or are there? TVGuide.com caught up with Candice Woodcock the day after her ouster to find out if her smooch from Adam was sexy or skanky — after all, they have been on the island 30 days without toothbrushes! — and also to see what the pre-med gal was thinking when she went on a rant against her former Aitu tribe mates.
TVGuide.com: I was actually pretty impressed that you got up the nerve to let it all out in last night's episode, to tell the Aitu alliance and Jonathan what was up.
Candice Woodcock: Well, you know, I generally can control myself when I'm upset. I don't have to go off on somebody. But at that point, I had done everything I could do to rationally talk to people and try to see if I could change the way things looked like they were going, and basically everybody told me, "No."
TVGuide.com: Did you think there was any chance that maybe you had swayed Yul's mind?
Candice: Well, no. Yul just said to me, "You know what, Candice? I'm going to be completely honest. Not happening." So, I just thought at this point, if I'm going to go down, I'm going to go down swingin'. And maybe I can stir up enough trouble to deflect a few votes and maybe, I don't know, bring somebody else down with me.
TVGuide.com: Do you think that they made a bad decision?
Candice: To vote me out?
TVGuide.com: Yeah.
Candice: Uh, no.
TVGuide.com: No?
Candice: The Aitu people, I did betray them — we were friends and still are friends — but it was a game. I think Yul had a quote where he said, "The two who mutinied left the Aitu people for dead," so I got what I deserved. They were sending me to Exile Island.
TVGuide.com: Repeatedly.
Candice: I didn't blame them for being angry. But I thought maybe they could have put a little of the hurt on Jonathan, too.
TVGuide.com: Yeah, they never send Jonathan to Exile, though he mutinied as well.
Candice: Well, they were very smart, and they made the strategic move of sending me because they knew that I was the one who had the "in" at Raro, not Jonathan. They wanted to keep me away from that tribe, so I wouldn't be able to strategize with them.
TVGuide.com: OK, but sending you into exile after the tribes merged was just a little mean.
Candice: Yeah. I was very upset about that. Becky actually cut up a few coconuts to give to me at the immunity challenge, because she felt really bad and knew I didn't get anything to eat. But it was a game, and I understood that, and they understood it was a game and that I mutinied not to be mean. It was strategy.
TVGuide.com: So, any regrets about mutinying and not waiting until a merge?
Candice: To be honest, it would have probably been better to wait until the merge, but I could have never known that ,when I went over to Raro, we were going to lose every immunity challenge and every reward challenge. And I could have never known that Jonathan would flip back, or that we'd get this bottle that said we'd have to vote out two people. It was kind of a rough turn of events. As Nate always said, "Karma's a bizzle." I think if any one of those things had gone differently, I would have made it a lot further in the game, but it's an unpredictable game, and that's what makes it so fun and so crazy. It is what it is.
TVGuide.com: Were you stunned that Jonathan followed you on the mutiny?
Candice: I was. I actually expected Sundra to step off, because she and I were close and we actually had a discussion with Nate when we pulled him over to Aitu about maybe Sundra, Adam, Parvati, Nate, Rebecca and myself forming an alliance after the merge. But Sundra is more conservative in her decision-making, so that probably scared her, and she didn't move. If you actually watch the episode, I kind of turn around and look them straight in the eye like, "Let's go," but she didn't, and I'm like, "Oh crap!" And then Jonathan steps off, and I'm like, "Ohhh, wow, this is going to be fun," because I just knew the personalities at Raro were going to clash with Jonathan because he's a strong personality.
TVGuide.com: Yeah, to say the least. Any chance you and Jonathan will get along outside of this game?
Candice: I really like Jonathan. I think he's a good guy. He was with me from day one; he did turn his back on me, but I did the same thing to Aitu. I understood that Jonathan was put in a tough spot, and he made the best decision that he thought he could make with the information that he had, and I can't blame him for that. I really kind of gave it to him when I was leaving, but I was trying to save myself.
TVGuide.com: You kind of got the best send-off in Survivor history, by the way. But I have to ask: How is it kissing someone when no toothbrushes have been on hand?
Candice: Well, we were out there for so long, we didn't smell ourselves. We'd walk in and Jeff [Probst] would be like, "Wow, you guys really stink," and I'd be like, "What? I don't smell anything." Obviously, you know rationally that everyone's gross. But we did use hibiscus twigs to kind of brush our teeth everyday, and gargle with salt water or whatever. I'm not saying that it wasn't nasty because it was a little gross, but when everyone's just as dirty as you are, it puts everybody on an equal playing field.
TVGuide.com: Is there any chance for you and Adam outside of Survivor?
Candice: No.
TVGuide.com: Not even a "maybe"?
Candice: No.
TVGuide.com: Any reason in particular?
Candice: We are very different people and very different personalities. In the game, you have only a few people to choose from to work with and we got along and he trusted me. I don't know why he decided to trust me, but he did and I knew that and I knew he wasn't going to turn his back on me, and that's a great thing to have in a game.
TVGuide.com: Now, are you still in med school? Or pre-med?
Candice: I'm in a graduate program at Georgetown [studying] physiology and biophysics. And it kind of mirrors the first year of medical school. I'm applying to med schools now, and hopefully I'll be there next year.
TVGuide.com: I read in your bio that you've been a fan of Survivor, and it even inspired you to go to Africa to work.
Candice: Oh, yeah, I'm a huge fan, and I've never missed an episode. People who know me know that when Survivor's on, you do not call me. And if you're in the room with me, once the commercial's over, you do not talk, you will get "shushed." I love the show, I love everything about it, I think it's one of the biggest challenges you can put yourself through. You're starving, you're uncomfortable.... It's a social game, it's strategic.... You've got the physical challenges.... It just challenges you in every way, and I've always loved that about it, and I was so excited to be able to be a part of it. I've been on cloud nine ever since I got the call to say, "You're on the show." So, yeah, it's great.

Ta ta Jonathan! Won't miss ya....but it might be a little boring back at camp now.
I forgot to record the morning news show. I would have loved to hear what he had to say! Can you imagine the greeting Jonathan received from the jury? An icy reception, no doubt. I think Nate will have a few choice words for him.
So the rat is gone now......yeah Adam's constant air-head smile is annoying me. And Parvati's huge smile, in much the same way, as if to constantly say - look how cute I am? They're both bugging me.
I'm pulling for Ozzy and Yul. If either one wins I will be a happy Survivor fan. If Adam wins, he'll spend it on clothes and hairgel. And Parvati would spend it on probably the same things. LOL

Kelarie wrote:Heads up Survivor fans, it looks like the end is near. Acutally it looks like the finale is this Sunday. That was a shock to me, that it is already over, but I guess they are trying to end it before Christmas.
It's actually a week later this year compared to last year and the year before. The season was longer. Yeah, they always wrap these up before Christmas. The only season that went into January was Africa which got it's premiere pushed back due to 9/11.
There were some spoilers in TV Guide.
Think of Survivor like a letter from a loved one," says Mark Burnett, who created the reality show that's now coming to the end of its 13th season. "You recognize the envelope and the handwriting, but [inside] is a fresh letter." "Fresh" is a good word to describe what's coming up in the finale of CBS' Survivor: Cook Islands. In an exclusive sneak peek, Burnett and host Jeff Probst tell TVGuide.com how they'll upend hallowed traditions on Cook's finale airing Sunday, Dec. 17.
Cooking the Numbers: There will be three finalists (instead of the usual two) at the final tribal council. And with the size of the jury raised to nine (from seven), there's the possibility of a three-way tie in the competition for the $1 million prize. Not to mention a bigger dose of rancor, bile and wacko questions from cast-offs who make up the newly expanded jury.
Final Challenges: The finale begins busting protocol immediately with five players still in the game. Their first challenge, Burnett reveals, "is the hardest puzzle we've ever done, called Compass Rose." Challenge producer Dan Munday spent two days, "like a mad scientist, cutting pieces of wood," says Probst. " Finally, he showed us exactly how it comes apart and then asked us to put it back together. I quit after 30 minutes." It takes the winner 25 minutes to solve it, Probst reveals, adding that "this final five had the highest IQs of any final five." The final four's last immunity challenge involves balancing on a very small post, one that gets smaller and smaller — 10 feet above the water. "It required balance but also intense concentration and pain tolerance, because it was made of steel and was not comfortable," Probst explains.
Survivors' Reactions: How does the surviving quartet react to the news that there would be three headed to the final tribal council? "The reaction is mixed," says Probst. "A couple are excited because it gives them an extra shot at the million. But for the other two, there is a sense of dread — they realize the strategy they had been planning won't work. From an audience point of view," says Probst, "the best news is that you have at least two people who are likable and very deserving of winning, and for me, that is a home run. I'll be very satisfied that whoever wins is a good winner."
Live Doin's: The big prize will be awarded in L.A. "The coolest part of the finale is that we're re-creating the tribal-council shipwreck at the CBS studios," Probst reveals.
The finale changes come at the conclusion of a season marked by new rules and procedures — first and foremost, the racially segregated teams that opened the Cook Islands contest. Despite the loud, early criticism of the tactic, Burnett says he's proud of the season. "What it really showed is that the American public will embrace a diverse cast," he says. "And the number of applications from minorities is now getting larger, because they see they have chance." So who's going to win? We asked Burnett to handicap the six players still in the game.
Yul: "He has that dangerous combination of being extremely likable and extremely cerebral. He used the immunity idol in a very smart way, and it actually turned the game."
Ozzy: "He's one of the greatest challenge players we've ever had, up there with Terry and Colby. He certainly is a target."
Adam: "There's no question that we've focused on his alliance with Candice, but he's a very strong player. He might be more clever than we think." (Candice, who was booted a couple of weeks ago, was "near genius," says Burnett, but Adam was "her Achilles heel.")
Becky: "She may be playing a clever, silent but deadly game in that she's letting [her ally] Yul take all the heat [while], for much of the show, she has been under the radar."
Parvati: "Parvati's a good athlete and can be a very strong challenge player, and she's not afraid to use her sexuality."
Sundra: "Sundra has offended nobody, and is the kind of person who can go to the end because she's not seen as a threat. And if she gets to the end — everyone likes her."
And the future? Survivor: Fiji — the show's 14th edition, set on the South Pacific island — will likely debut in February. "It has an extremely unique opening episode," Burnett says. "There will be an Exile Island, but it's quite different, and the hidden immunity portion of the game has an interesting twist." And look for yet another new way to divide the tribes — and keep Survivor fresh.
