j - all I have to say is I had 2 extremely painful colon surgeries, no privacy whatsoever, people coming and going. Somehow I survived - with Demerol and Percoset's.
But my point is this - anytime a nurse warms me an exam, procedure, test might be uncomfortable, I just joke - oh please, I had the doozy of a surgery (two in fact) of them all! As soon as I describe what all they did me - they called my first surgery the blue plate special of the day - a nurse usually, just relaxes and then smiles. Because no matter what she does to me, it's just a walk in the park, compared to 7 years ago.......
So enjoy these exams and I hope you never need major surgery!

No, seriously, it has something to do with the force of air on your abdominal wall and the way it makes things move so he/she can check for a hernia and other problems. Plus, it's a modesty thing to make you feel comfortable -- rather than having to watch.
