Texas Winter Weather Thread #3 - GFS showing cold christmas

Just cold here in West Houston... and no fireplace! Well, I did cheat and turn on the starter, which looks rather nice with the glass doors and all, but... oh well. Better luck next time.

Weatherrabbit - I was up in your neck of the woods today browsing through the junk/antique shops on the square. Lots of empty real estate from the last time I was through there several months ago. Whassup in Tomball anyway?!

nothing much just its cold about 43*F and dropping very slowly, tomball is all the same nothing changes yet.....haha!

EWG, just like in 2004, it looks like we are too far north to see any precip. Who would of thunk it?

Unfortunately it looks like most of that sleet is turning back into rain on the radar.The forecast low for Houston is 31 but with all the cloud cover temps will struggle to fall out of the 40's.

I wouldn't trust those "rain/ice/snow" radars. Each one has different requirements for it to show a different color. Areas to the south of Houston are still reporting some sleet at this time (and the forecast says that this should continue through the night).

Also, up in north Houston we are already down into the 30s to near 40F. Though southern areas may struggle to get below 40F tonight...north of I-10, a freeze (or close to it) looks likely.

I just hope I can get a snowflake/sleet pellet out of this mess before it is over with.

I know. This year alone has been bad for us. The first system missed us to the north, and this one may miss us to the south. We have been left high and dry both times from winter weather (unless this one surprises us this evening).

Let's just hope we are rewarded for it in the end with a nice 2-4" snowfall right over us (at some point this winter).

That would definately be a surprise.lol I'm sitting at 36 degrees and slowly dropping. We were supposed to get down to 23 to 25 tonight but I don't see that happening with all the cloud cover that moved in.

It looks like we have a couple small pockets of sleet to the west and east of Montgomery County but I'm pretty confident it is not reaching the ground.

feel for ya, hangin' in at 43.0, but it is dropping slowly since I have been home since about 6:30 its has going from 45 to 43, need a nice 10 degree drop that would do it

It's 41F at Hooks, 42F at IAH, and 37F at Conroe. Also, I am at 38F right now (with a small pocket of clearer skies currently over my head). If these clear skies start filling in more...we might NOSE DIVE in temps. overnight.

I remember my first snowfall was jan. 1973 was only 4, I believe that was only a 1" to 3" event......btw now 42.4*F now, R.H. level is going up, it has almost drop a degree in about 20 minutes, I see on my weatherbug that beckendorf intermediate dewpoint is 28*F, temp keep dropping...

Sleet being reported this evening off and on over the SW 1/3rd of SE TX.

Light sleet has been reported over Matagorda, Wharton, and Brazoria counties this evening as upper air impulse on east side of Mexican upper low moves eastward. Low level remain extremely dry with dewpoints in the teens to mid 20's and this is evaporating most of the sleet before reaching the ground. Only the heaviest reflectivity on radar is likely reaching the ground and this is confined to the area around and NE of Matagorda Bay. PM soundings show saturated profile above 700mb with very dry conditions below allowing for wet bulb cooling near the surface and gradual saturation of the air column from top down. Current wet bulb analysis only allows for surface temps to cool to near 36-32. Feel that the given dry layer below the cloud bearing level in the sounding will preclude much precip from reaching the ground.

With that said, ice pellets will be possible tonight W of I-45 where the atmosphere slowly moistens allowing the precip to gradually reach the ground. Some concern with temps expected to fall near freezing by morning, however only trace amounts of precip. should result in little to no hazardous driving.

No accumulation is expected due to warm grounds and only very light amounts.

BTW: just got back from the evening run and even with thin veil of high clouds over head radiational processes are at work given rising stream columns from area manholes. Thick mid level deck was noted off to the west and this should really cap the temp fall in the next few hours.

If only temps were 10-15 degrees cooler and the bulk of the precipitation was about 100 miles further north,we'd have a significant winter weather event for much of the western Gulf coast.

After all the years for growing in the Houston-Galveston area wishing for snow and hanging onto evey possibilty; it was a dream come true.

I see someone else shares that too, even thought I grew up southwest of houston in wharton county always hoping and wishing, thats why we(natives) get excited to even to have sleet or ice pellets or something close to snow
