Wireless Internet Help

#1 Postby wx247 » Thu Dec 28, 2006 7:04 am

Good morning everyone. My mother bought laptops for my two sisters for Christmas and also bought a Linksys router. I bought one for my house back earlier in the year and had a terrible time hooking it up. I was on the phone for hours with their customer service people (5 to be exact) from who knows where with who knows what kind of accent who would hang up on me after about 15 minutes a piece. I finally managed to get ahold of a supervisor who spoke plain English and the problem was resolved. I have talked to a couple of other people who have bought Linksys, one of which finally gave up and took it back. The other who had to pay to bring someone in to set it up.

The problem is... I don't know how I set mine up. The router my mother bought has the exact same problem mine did. Their customer service tech help is in shambles right now because of the Taiwanese earthquake which disrupted internet in Asia.

So... anyone here have any experience setting one up? If so, what brand did you use? Any suggestions on a different type to buy?

Thanks in advance!!!

I have used Linksys never had any problems. Make sure you install the software first before connecting your router to your modem. After installation if you are having problems connecting on the laptops, just reset the modem and router by unplugging them for 10 seconds. If you have added a a security key on setup (WEP Key) make sure you add this on your laptops too or they won't connect. Normally it will ask you for one, if not goto start, network places and setup a wireless network, follow the prompts, hope this helps, if not I'll be online off and on today and will try to help

Let me try to explain what the issue is. I go through the setup process fine. All the appropriate cords are plugged into the right spots and all of the lights on the router are working, but when it goes to check the computer's settings it says that there is little or no connectivity and can't get beyond that step.

Have you got a wireless access list set up on it? I have on the router here and have to add the MAC addresses of the wireless connectors to allow new devices to connect to it. That is as well as having the correct router names and passwords on the connecting computers.

.

Try this:

Shut down the computers.
Unplug the power cord at the router.
Unplug the power cord at the modem.

then:

Plug in the modem, wait for the lights light up
Plug in the router. wait for the lights to light up
Hit the reset button and let the router reset to default settings
Turn on the computers.

Once you have established a connection, secure the router.

The problem maybe with the signal from the Internet Provider.

I have RoadRunner and a wireless Linksys router. Sometimes the modem and Linksys router don't play nicely with each other. RR does something with their signal that cause the router operate incorrectly. So I have to reset the router in order for the signal sync correctly.

I had problems setting one up in my girlfriends apartment at her college. I ended up taking it back and giving up.

Also be sure to get into the Routers Control Panel and set up your WAP (security settings) Most routers are just plug and play??? So if you are having issues be sure to check your software firewall settings on your puter and laptops. I run a 802.11 A and G wireless network using 8mbs cable connection and I just plugged it in.. ran the windows network wizard and named made sure that all the computers had the same domain name (WESNET) is what I used. Now to get on my network all you have to do is just enter the security pass code and your in.

Please let us know if you need anymore help.. Linksys is the best router since they are owned by Cisco.

One last thing is XP runs wireless BETTER with SP2 so if your puters don't have that I would reccomend that you get it ;)
