Ok, Philly is putting a ban in also. My hubby used to smoke 3 packs a day and quit on 7/23/05, if you remember is when he went into the hospital, and hasn't had one since. I will not smoke around him nor will I smoke in the apartment, I go outside and I smoke less than half a pack a day, however now my second job will start a new rule, if you smoke you will not be hired and if you already are a smoker, you must quit, which I will have to do. They are a private institution (cancer hospital)so I will have to quit. From what I understand, next week they will offer acupuncture or hypnosis to quit.
I need to quit, but geez give it a break, it's getting as bad as getting flu shots, sigh

Who says you can take away my rights so that you can have yours? A bit of a double standard, dont you think?

You can't breathe outdoors at a football game? What about the diesel trucks you are behind filling up your car with fumes? Is that any different? What about oil smoke that is coming from bad engines but the people drive them anyway? I mean, the list could go on and on!

We all know smoking kills, sometimes in places like that it is impossible to escape it. I'm glad they've banned it at the club I support from next season. No double standards at all, I'm not standing/sitting there killing people as well.
Trust me you won't find anyone more anti smoking than me!
(Oh and I don't actually own a car, I use public transport as much as possible

You dodged the answer, why is it you can take away a smokers rights to satisfy your rights? It is not up to you to decide. If that person wants to smoke, so be it.
We all know weather kills, can we stop weather from happening? nope.

There have been studies, to the best of my knowledge, that smoking can cause illness in children (especially if they have athsma).
I see no problem banning smoking around children (such as in a car with children). However, this no smoking in a bar or other places intended for CONSENTING ADULTS is going way too far. I wonder if that is unconstitutional
You are right, then they turned around and said it didn't. I dunno.

I don't care about people smoking outside.I just hate it when people smoke inside, the smoke has nowhere to escape and accumulates in the air.Like I said before people with asthma or other breathing difficulties can't enjoy a meal at a resturant or a game at a bowling alley without choking.

Not allowed to smoke anywhere here where food or drinks are provided! no smoking in clubs or anything........i think its all a good idea!
Although the clubs have heaps of people outside as the night gets on.....all the smokers! i dont think its an issue but to me i would have thought there would be alot more fights

I think people should be able to smoke in their homes, their cars, their businesses (if self-employed),etc. However, when it comes to public places such as hotels, restaurants, etc., I think smoking should be banned b/c there are many people who have asthma, are allergic to cigarette smoke, etc. I know whenever I start to smell cigarette smoke, I get a really bad headache. Oh well, it's just my opinion, and I don't mean for anyone to get offended.

Well, while I personally don't agree that the government should mandate an all-out "smoking ban," I do agree with a mandate for having special designated areas for smoking only... completely separated from the rest of the establishment.
For what it's worth, Omaha has recently enforced a smoking ban for public establishments that serve food. Clubs that don't serve food are not affected, but bars (that serve food) and restaurants cannot allow smoking. Since the ban has gone into effect, sales have actually increased. A lot of bar owners noted that they had an increase in patronage from non-smokers happy that they could go out without smelling like smoke afterwards.

It should also be noted that smoker's don't have a right to smoke in someone else's proximity. The jury is completely in when it comes to secondhand smoke. It does affect lung health. It's been known for years that inhaling ANY kind of smoke is harmful.
Your right to swing your fist ends at the tip of my nose.
That being said, I still think it should be up to the establishments. Restaurants that allow smoking have slower business. Although, as senorpepr said, smoking bans have, almost without exception, helped local economies.
