Beaumont has had a smoking ban for about 4 months or so. No smoking in bars and restaurants and if you smoke, you have to be at least 25 feet away from a main entrance. I tend to agree with senor and the ones who have said that a separate smoking area is fine. I just don't want to breathe other people's smoke when I'm trying to eat dinner somewhere. I used to smoke...I had no idea how bad I stunk! lol

Anyway, smokers have a right to smoke. I just believe that I have a right not to have to breathe that smoke if I go somewhere in public. Think of people with children, who have chosen not to smoke because of their children. They would like to go out in public without their kids having to breathe in smoke. I can't tell you how many times I've been walking into Walmart or somewhere like that and start gagging on all the smoke because everyone conglomerates just outside the door since they can't smoke inside. I want to go in the store. I just don't think I should have to plow through a plume of smoke to get there. ;)
Of course this new ordinance helps that a little. Now you just have to dodge them where they conglomerate a little farther away from the door. That's fine though...that seems fair enough.

Frick...about no smoking in your car with a child 10 years old or younger. So if they're 11, it's ok to give them second-hand smoke but not if they're 10. ooook
Ya gotta wonder how they came up with that age!

As a smoker, I do understand the concerns about second hand smoke for those that don't smoke.

HOWEVER, I do believe that concessions do need to be made for those that do smoke. In cities where smoking is banned in public places and now need to be several feet from doorways, where the heck are smokers supposed to stand - in the street?

Don't get me started with air travel now. Yes, security is needed and we need to do what we have to do but what if you have a layover or you get there 2 hours early as you're supposed to and get through the security line? If you want to smoke you have to go back past the security line, outside and then go through it again. The whole trip can be stressful/aggravating as it is. Why can't there be outside areas for smoking once you're past the security areas? You've been checked, correct?

BTW, the Atlantic City City Council has temporarily voted unanimously to ban smoking in casinos. The permanent vote is scheduled for the end of January.

I think it should be up to an establishment as to whether or not they want to cater to smokers or not.

I don't think anyone is lumping you into that package. :) My post was directed towards the inconsiderate ones, and if you've ever been to Walmart in Beaumont, you'd understand. It's better now, but you used to have to go through a plume of smoke to get inside and another to get out. Yeah, that's irritating.

If only everyone was as considerate as you, Frick, etc.

I don't think most smokers mean to be inconsiderate. The older smokers grew up smoking anywhere and everywhere. No one complained about it like they do these days. It was just how things were done. I think among the middle aged and younger smokers are very considerate of those around them that don't smoke.
