I forgot that my family had dinner with President Ford in Biloxi. My parents reminded me this evening. It was in 1976. Of course, that restaurant is gone now, but the memories are still there.

Jackie Aldrich looked at a black and white picture of her Fisherman's Wharf restaurant. There she was, standing in front of her sign, and next to her was President Gerald Ford.

"He was about as tall as you. Yes, I do remember that," she told me.

Aldrich grabbed my arm. It was the same way she grabbed President Ford's arm outside her Biloxi restaurant.

"Oh my goodness, it was just so mindboggling," she said. "I couldn't even think."

In September 1976, the president was campaigning on Biloxi's waterfront. His staff wanted to sample some of the area's tasty cuisine. So the White House contacted Aldrich's husband. Mrs. Aldrich won't forget what her husband told her next.

"He said the president was coming. And I said, 'You're kidding me.'"

President Ford, Trent Lott, and a host of republican supporters crammed into the Fisherman's Wharf. Anastasia Himmel was the restaurant's cashier.

"I'm so proud that I was there with him," she said. "I loved it. It was exciting. We were all waiting and anticipating him getting there and everything."

One of the pictures in Himmel's Ocean Springs home is of her standing on the restaurant's wooden staircase, waiting for President Ford's motorcade to arrive.

"We were all excited. That was a highlight for me," she remembered.

Once inside, the admittedly shy cashier made a rather bold move.

"When he was sitting down at the middle table and everybody was there, I thought if I don't go ask this man to take a picture, I'll be sorry the rest of my life," she said.

That picture is the centerpiece of a collage made by her husband.

"I didn't think he would do it," Himmel said, referring to the president. "He jumped right up, he hugged me, and took the picture."

It's a reminder of the day 30 years ago when the staff at Fisherman's Wharf got to meet the most powerful man in the world.

"He was great. He was a kind person," Himmel said. "He was that kind of person. And it just made you feel patriotic for him to be there."

Security for a presidential visit, even in 1976, was extremely tight. Aldrich remembers scuba divers swimming under her restaurant while President Ford dined on her seafood. She also remembers that the Secret Service took a sample of everything the president ate back to the White House, just in case he got sick. Everything included the famous pie made only at the Fisherman's Wharf. Mrs. Aldrich only gave out her secret recipe one time. It was to the Secret Service right after President Ford's visit.

IIRC, a state funeral was held for Nixon (at least, Nixon's funeral was heavily televised) and then Reagan, so I too think it will happen.

President Ford always struck me as the kind of man who did the best he could to unify the nation following some traumatic events. He never sought the office to begin with, which is the mark of someone who will be careful and judicious with all the power the presidency carries. I think history shall be kind to him.

It doesn't seem all that long ago to me even though I was 6 years old when he took office....

Yes, even the broadcast networks will probably cover it extensively. Some things will be a bit different this time around(compared to Reagan), since he served a quarter-century in the House.

Nixon did not have a State Funeral. He was entitled to one, but didn't want one. He did have a public one in California though which all the living Presidents attended.

Ford funeral plans unfolding
Updated: Dec 27, 2006 07:27 PM

GRAND RAPIDS -- Gerald R. Ford's state funeral will begin Friday in his beloved California, with the late president then to lie in state in the U.S. Capitol over the weekend before burial in Grand Rapids, Mich.,a family representative said Wednesday.

Giving the first details of funeral arrangements for the 38th president, family representative Gregory D. Willard said events will last until Wednesday, when Ford will be interred in a hillside tomb near his presidential museum in his home state of Michigan.

Ceremonies begin Friday, with a private prayer service for the family at St. Margaret's Church in Palm Desert, Calif., visitation by friends and a period of public repose.

On Saturday, Ford's body will be flown to Washington, D.C. in late afternoon, his hearse pausing at the World War II memorial in joint tribute to the wartime Navy reserve veteran and his comrades in uniform, Willard said.

The state funeral will be conducted in the Capitol Rotunda that evening and after that, the public will be able to file in to pay last respects. Ford was expected to lie in state until Tuesday morning.

In a departure from tradition meant to highlight Ford's long service in Congress, his body will lie in repose outside the main door of the House and, later, outside the main doors of the Senate chamber.

"I know personally how much those two tributes themselves meant to President Ford," Willard said.

The last major event in Washington will be Tuesday morning, with a funeral service at the National Cathedral. Ford's remains will leave shortly after noon for a service and interment near his Grand Rapids, Mich., museum.

There will be a number of public and private services before he is laid to rest at the Ford Museum in Grand Rapids. Ford, an Eagle Scout, will be honored by local Boy Scouts.

If I recall, Nixon's family requested not to have a state funeral for Richard Nixon.

The lack of a state funeral was at Nixon's own request.

Ford Funeral: FNC's Coverage Plans
FNC's coverage plans, according to ICN:

> Friday: Shep Smith hosts live coverage of the California service from 3 to 4pm during Studio B.

> Saturday: Chris Wallace hosts the D.C. services from 5 to 8:30pm.

> Tuesday: Brit Hume "hosts special coverage of the processional leaving the Capitol and the departure for Grand Rapids, Michigan where President Ford will be buried" from 8:30am to 1pm.

> Wednesday: Hume covers the Michigan services from 1 to 3pm.

Ford Funeral: CNN's Coverage Plans
CNN's coverage will be led by Blitzer and Greenfield:

> Friday: "CNN will provide reports from Palm Desert, Calif., where the Ford family plans to hold a private service at St. Margaret's Episcopal Church."

> Saturday: Live coverage "from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. as officials transport Ford's body to Washington, D.C." Coverage resumes at 5 p.m. "with a special edition of The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer and Jeff Greenfield" as Ford's body arrives at the Capitol.

> Sunday: A special Late Edition from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

> Tuesday: "Blitzer and Greenfield will anchor the network's live coverage of the National Cathedral Memorial Service on Tuesday, Jan. 2, beginning at 9 a.m."

Ford Funeral: MSNBC's Coverage Plans
MSNBC's coverage plans in this press release are vague. Anchor assignments will be announced tomorrow.

"MSNBC will provide live coverage throughout the day on Saturday, beginning with the airport departure ceremony in Palm Springs, California and continuing with the arrival at Andrews Air Force Base in the afternoon. Coverage will then conclude with the arrival at the Capitol and State Funeral ceremony," the release says.

MSNBC will cover the cathedral service "as well as the departure and arrival ceremonies at Andrews Air Force Base and Grand Rapids, Michigan" on Tuesday, and will have live reports from Michigan on Wednesday...

Ford Funeral: NBC's Coverage Plans
It sounds like NBC will not carry the California services for Gerald Ford on Friday. (They're private, so pictures may be limited to arrivals and departures.)

Brian Williams will anchor all of NBC's coverage, which begins on Saturday with the ceremonies at the Capitol from 6:30 to 8pm.

On Tuesday, Williams will anchor from D.C. beginning at 10am. Tim Russert will be in studio. Campbell Brown and Tom Brokaw will be at the National Cathedral.

Also Tuesday, "Today will be a split edition with Matt Lauer anchoring live from Washington, D.C. and Meredith Vieira from New York."

Ford Funeral: CBS's Coverage Plans
Katie Couric will anchor "Gerald Ford: Death of a President" coverage beginning tomorow. Live coverage begins around 3:20pm Friday as the family and coffin arrives at the church for the private funeral service in Palm Desert, California.

It continues around 5:20pm Saturday when Ford's body moves to the Capitol to begin a period of lying in state.

Coverage of Tuesday's funeral service "will begin following The Early Show."

Couric will anchor the CBS Evening News from D.C. on Saturday and Tuesday. Bob Schieffer and Douglas Brinkley will contribute to the coverage.

Ford Funeral: ABC's Coverage Plans
"ABC News will broadcast live coverage of ceremonies planned for the State Funeral of President Gerald Ford in California, Washington, D.C., and Michigan beginning Friday," the network says. It'll air the Saturday evening ceremony at the Capitol and the cathedral service on Tuesday morning. "Regular programming will be interrupted throughout the week as events warrant."

Charles Gibson will anchor, joined by Barbara Walters, George Stephanopoulos, John Cochran, George Will, David Gergen, and biographer Richard Norton Smith, with Brian Rooney in Rancho Mirage and Dean Reynolds in Grand Rapids.

Gibson will anchor from D.C. on Tuesday.

More to come later...

RIP Gerald Ford :(

I am actually in my home town in the northern half of Michigan until the 6th, so I won't get to see the burial in person. I do plan on visiting the grave sometime when I get back to Grand Rapids, though.

The US Stock Market (Wall Street) will be closed on Tuesday Jan 2, 2007 ... making it a 4 day stretch of the stock market closed... since Monday is New Year's Day.

The last time the markets were closed for 4 consecutive days was in September 2001 during the US Terror Attacks...when the markets were closed on Sept 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 and 16, 2001.

Wall Street tries to avoid having to close for 4 consective days at all times.... but clearly this is a special circumstance.

Coming up shortly: A departure ceremony at the church(where he lied in repose all night), and then it's off to Palm Springs International Airport where Ford's remains will depart for Washington.

At 5:20pm ET, the plane will arrive at Andrews AFB in Washington with an arrival ceremony, followed by transportation to the Capitol going through Alexandria, VA, Ford's hometown during most of his political life, with a brief stop at the WWII memorial for Ford's service in the Navy. At 6:30pm ET, the remains will arrive at the Capitol with a ceremony and then he will briefly lie in state at the House and Senate chamber before being moved into the Rotunda for the State Funeral at 7pm ET. He will then lie in state until Tuesday Morning.

A person apparently collapsed during the middle of the funeral about 5 minutes ago. Seems like things are getting back to normal after a brief delay.
