Thanks again everyone for your prayers.

God is working miracles as my wife has now made it to a 4th day without any signs of labor. We also hit the 25-week mark today based on yesterday's ultrasound.

I'll update if anything changes. God Bless all of you.

My thoughts and prayers are with you, your wife and your baby right now.

In the reassurance dept., I have a friend whose son was born at approximately this time in her pregnancy and he is doing wonderfully. He is now about 10 years old, still smaller than the average boy his age, but otherwise he is a normal bundle of 10 yr old boy energy. I know in the beginning there were some obstacles to overcome. But it can be done.

In all likelihood you will have a preemie, the question now is "how preemie"? A piece of advice I received when my first daughter was born early is NOT to go out and read every book on prematurity I could find. Also not to read about possible issues of prematurity unless we needed to deal with those issues with my daughter. This came from the neonatologist treating her. He had just finished writing a book on premature babies. He said that reading about all the POSSIBLE (emphasis on possible) issues we could face would do nothing but scare us. There are a wide range of issues POSSIBLE, but not probable. It is POSSIBLE I might win the lottery this week, but I don't need to spend time obsessing over what I would do if it happened.

Now, as for all the garbage you read in the paper about preemies having lower IQ's than full term or higher birth-weight babies. It is a crock of &$#! I know of at least 4 preemies in our school's gifted and talented program, one of them I know for a fact to have only weighed 1 1/2 lbs at delivery. Again, approximately the same time in the pregnancy that you are at. This child is not small for her age, she is a rough and tumble kid who is one of the best goalies for her age group in my kids soccer league.

As for age, keep in mind when your baby is born you will have to learn and live your child's adjusted (or corrected) age. You will have a baby that should only approach the size and abilities of a newborn when it approaches his/her due date. Keep in mind that being born early will not be the optimal development environment either, so the child may even be behind where he/she would be at birth normally. This adjusted or corrected age will go forward with your child through all the normal childhood milestones. If your baby were to be born this week, he/she should not be approaching a one year old's milestones for nearly a year and a half at least.

I will be praying for you all. Each day you make it through without delivery is a huge success.

Thanks for your prayers again everyone, we're at the 5-day mark.

Hey weathermom, thanks for the advice. I agree with you - I have postponed a tour to our NICO unit b/c I wasn't prepared to see what the 24-week babies were dealing with. Now thankfully we're at 25 weeks 1 day and every day means a lot.

Some other good news, we're almost to 7 days and when we reach that milestone, the Dr. says her goal is to get us to 32-34 weeks. At that point the children here - even though they are preemies - generally are problem-free. The good news is that we are at Memorial-Hermann at the Texas Medical Center, which has one of the best - if not the best - NICU in the world. It is a world-class facility and we are blessed to be here.

Thank God for another day. Amid all this turmoil right now we feel truly blessed.
